Dexter: Original Sin is a prequel series to Dexter and is created by Clyde Phillips. The crime drama show features Patrick Gibson, Christian Slater, among others. The show aired on Paramount+ and focused on a young Dexter Morgan, a budding serial killer, who is a vigilante and has an uncontrollable lust for killing.

The series features Gibson as Dexter and revolves around Dexter’s youth in 1991. The prequel was set 15 years before the original series. After premiering in 2024 and finishing one season, the show was unfortunately cancelled by Paramount+.

The cancellation of the show led to a furor from fans as the prequel delved into important parts of Dexter’s backstory and provided an insight into his sociopathic mind. Therefore, here are five reasons why Dexter: Original Sin should not have been cancelled.

Debra’s backstory, Dexter’s killing of Nurse Mary, and other reasons why Dexter: Original Sin should have got a new season

1. The show explored Brian’s backstory

One of the most dangerous yet enigmatic characters in the original series, Dexter: Original Sin brings back Brian Moser. In the original show, his backstory was not explored but the prequel talks about the character. It is revealed that Brian had a complicated past, which began because he was separated from his brother as a child. This led to being passed around from foster homes to mental health institutions. Therefore, Dexter: Original Sin should have been continued as it provided valuable insights into important past characters.

2. Dexter hallucinated about serial killers, which offered a look into his mind

The original series focused on how Dexter was a sociopath and needed various distractions to control his hunger for killing. In the original show, it was shown how Dexter struggled with disposing of bodies and therefore, he idolized real-life serial killers for inspiration about his modus operandi. In Dexter: Original Sin, the show shows how Dexter hallucinates about Ed Gein, John Wayne Gacy, and others as they appear to give him instructions about disposing off bodies. This allowed the prequel to flesh out more details about Dexter’s character.

3. Dexter’s killing of Nurse Mary

Mary was Dexter’s first kill approved by Harry and therefore it is an important part of Dexter’s story. Mary was an angel of death as she pretended to care for patients but killed them slowly. Dexter discovered this when Harry got worse under Mary’s care. In Dexter: Original Sin, viewers get to see the killing of Mary and how much effort it took Dexter. The original show only showed it as a flashback but the prequel allowed this aspect of Dexter’s story to be relived and therefore, the prequel allowed more backstory about Dexter.

4. The backstory of Debra

Dexter: Original Sin also focuses on the origins of other characters in the Dexter universe. One such example is Debra Morgan, who had a sports scholarship to college but when she saw Harry and Dexter’s bonding, she changed her mind. Becoming a cop allowed Debra to get approval from her father and brother. Therefore, the prequel allows the major characters’ backstories to be fleshed out as Debra found her path, while Dexter found yet another reason to pursue justice.

5. Harry and Laura have important flashbacks

The flashbacks between Laura Moser and Harry were enlightening in Dexter: Original Sin. Laura was Harry’s CI who wanted to bring down Hector Estrada. The prequel showed how close the two were and Harry was an important part of Dexter and Laura’s life. The show also showcased the events that led to the unfortunate murder of Laura and these flashbacks give an insight into Dexter and Brian’s life as little children. Therefore, the prequel was an important show.
