Amy Santiago, played by Melissa Fumero, was one of the most competitive detectives in the 99th precinct in Brooklyn 99. She was known for her goal-oriented and nerdy personality, due to which she found herself teased by her colleagues. Her competitiveness with fellow detective Jake Peralta is one of the highlights of Brooklyn 99, as it also depicts the growth and transformation of both characters as their friendly rivalry turned into something more.

Other than her relationship with Jake, Amy’s interaction with Captain Holt also brought humor to the episodes due to her being sometimes overbearing with her need to impress Captain Holt. She sometimes went the extra mile to get the Captain’s attention, resulting in her embarrassing herself.

Here’s a list of 7 such instances where Amy went too far for Captain Holt’s approval in Brooklyn 99.

7 Times Amy Santiago from Brooklyn 99 went too far for Captain Holt’s approval

7) Amy’s rambling

More often than not, Amy is found to ramble about weird things in front of Captain Holt, creating awkward moments. Her attempts to carry on or start a conversation with the Captain were mostly failures. For instance, in episode 3 of season 1 of Brooklyn 99, Holt called Amy to thank her for her help in the Jay Street drug bust, to which she tells him why they do it. Confused with her answer, Holt asks if she does to get praised, which leaves Amy speechless since this is one of the main reasons she wants to solve more cases.

He then gives Amy a task to lead the police program for at-risk youth, which results in another embarrassing moment when she tries to go too far in explaining how she will do a great job. As Holt tells her to head it up, she replies:

"I’ll head and shoulders it up."

And she doesn’t stop there as she keeps adding more phrasal verbs until she realises that she is rambling and stops. Holt asks her to be more articulate among kids. To which she again replies:

"Yes, sir, I will make better mouth."

Knowing that it went too far and there is no way she can return from it — she leaves, mentally scolding herself.

6) Amy gives in to Holt’s manipulation

While not a negative event, Amy still snitches on Jake by telling Holt why he had punched Journalist Brogan and almost got himself suspended. When Holt asks her first, she refuses to tell him by saying it is Jake's matter and he should be the one telling him, and if he hasn’t, there might be a good reason behind it.

However, in episode 8 of Brooklyn 99 season 1, Holt says he is disappointed with Amy as he thought they were closer than that, making Amy reveal everything, even after knowing that he was manipulating, and says:

"I know you’re manipulating me, but I love it and I’ll tell you everything."

She ends up telling him that Brogan used a homophobic slur, which caused Jake to punch him.

5) Amy giving Christmas presents to Holt even when he asked them not to

Since Holt has a "no Christmas presents" rule, no one is allowed to give him gifts, but Amy always tries to get around that rule and give him something every Christmas. For instance, in season 2 episode 10 of Brooklyn 99, Amy finds another way to give Holt a present as she creates a scrapbook containing his achievements.

As Holt told everyone not to spend money buying him presents, Amy found a way where she doesn’t have to spend money but only her time, which she claims to be worthless, and makes a scrapbook. However, just like every Christmas, her present doesn't impress Holt, and he asks that it be taken away. Another instance of embarrassing herself in front of Holt by going the extra mile when it was not required.

4) Amy asks for A + in her grade

In episode 2 of Brooklyn 99 season 2, the new deputy chief, Madeline Wuntch, comes to inspect the 99th precinct, and Holt finds himself failing as he knows that his nemesis won’t give them good grades. Amy reprimands him and tells him that he has to fight for good grades, as if they fail, her future will be a failure, which she will not accept.

Thanking her for encouragement the previous day, Holt grades her for her performance for the last few days, which happens to be an A. Amy thanks him, but still tries to go a little too far by asking if his grading system has +s or if A is the highest, souring Holt’s mood a little.

3) Amy’s attempt to become a good partner to Holt results in his food poisoning

In episode 13 of season 2 of Brooklyn 99, Amy gets excited after she finds a mistake in an old case and gets to work with Holt. To catch the culprit, Holt even takes Amy as his partner, giving her a chance to impress him. While they are waiting for the culprit in their car, Amy asks about Holt’s former partner and tries to learn how she could be a better partner for him.

They even try street food as Holt eats a lamb sandwich, taking a risk and telling Kevin about it. As they see their suspect arrive, they go to arrest him and find out that their culprit has already passed away, and it is his grandson. The conversation is cut short when Holt tells Amy to let him take him back to their office as he isn’t feeling good.

It is revealed that Holt suffered from food poisoning due to street food. Amy apologized for being the reason for his poisoning, as she wanted to prove that she can also be a good partner to him, like his former partner.

2) Amy tries to cheer Holt up

In initial episodes, Amy always tried to be at the top by finishing her work before Holt could even command it, like finishing the paperwork before Holt asked for it. For instance, in episode 4 of season 1 of Brooklyn 99, Holt informs them that he wants their paperwork, to which Amy announces that she has already finished hers, trying to impress Holt, but gets into trouble due to Jake.

She later tries to make her attempts at small talk and says he looks good in the painting, which he had been staring at for a while. Holt declares that he hates the painting, again embarrassing herself. She quickly replies with me too, creating another awkward memory with her boss attempting to impress her.

After being invited to Holt's birthday party in episode 16 of Brooklyn 99 season 1, all of Holt’s team scatter around to blend in with the party while Amy goes to Holt’s kitchen and begins taking photos of the contents of his cupboards. When Terry asks what she is doing, she tells him she is trying to find a common thing between her and Holt to bond with him. However, Terry takes her phone and asks her to go to the party.

This doesn’t break her spirit as she takes it even farther by going to Holt’s bedroom to look at his DVD collections to find a common ground and bond with Holt. She is then trapped in Holt's bathroom with Jake and Terry, but they are caught when she sneezes due to Cheddar, Holt's dog, since she is allergic, making another attempt at befriending Holt brings just more embarrassment for her.
