7. 13 Reasons Why (2017)

13 Reasons Why is a solemn drama of teenager Clay Jensen. One day, he discovered a box of tapes at home. Hannah Baker, a girl he liked but died two weeks before, made the tapes. Throughout the tapes, Hannah presents thirteen reasons as to why she committed suicide. Clay listens to the recordings and is angry and saddened. He also asks whether he has contributed to her story.

There are flashbacks of Clay and Hannah getting intimate when they are at a movie theatre. In the first season, viewers have seen them dancing during the Winter Formal, and then they almost have s*x during a party. But Hannah halts, and Clay is bewildered. This scene can be compared to the one in Heartstopper where Nick and Charlie are willing to be intimate. The two scenes depict young love, marked by both love and times of uncertainty.

Never Have I Ever is a television series about a teenage girl, Devi Vishwakumar. She is mourning, in love, and a drama queen. Mindy Kaling is the show's creator, which also stars tennis legend John McEnroe.

Devi is in love with two boys, Paxton and Ben. Ben is her school rival, but in the end, he turns out to be the person she is deeply in love with. The show discusses the issues of family, identity, and growing up. Despite all of the highs and lows, Devi and Ben are only able to start dating in Season 4. Ben goes all the way to inform Devi that he loves her. This is a tender and emotional moment. The love between them grows through candid conversations and mending the broken fences.

The scene where Ben clarifies to Devi that he loves her resembles the scene in Heartstopper where Charlie explains to Nick that he loves him. The two scenes illustrate the challenge and audacity of expressing love for someone for the first time, as well as its meaning.

The Summer I Turned Pretty narrates the story of Belly Conklin and her entire life relationship with Conrad and Jeremiah Fisher. Belly had been staying at their beach house every summer, and since their early years, she had been in love with Conrad. The series narrates their complicated relationship. As they grow up, it's full of challenges, family illness, heartbreak, and difficult choices.

Conrad struggles to express his feelings while Belly deals with her feelings for the two brothers. After spending some time away in Paris, Belly and Conrad reunite in Season 3. Conrad shows up to surprise Belly in Paris, and they spend meaningful time together, rediscovering the affectionate bond between them. They go to a rooftop where Belly tells how Paris is her home, how much she has grown and matured there.

The se*ual interactions between Belly and Conrad in Paris during the show's third season, Episodes 9-11, are comparable to the personal scenes in Heartstopper, when the main protagonists, Nick and Charlie, are mature enough to have s*x. The two couples reach a point where they are emotionally prepared to deepen their physical relationship, having overcome a painful experience of confronting their issues and establishing trust over time.

4. S*x Education (2019)

S*x Education is a story of a son of a s*x therapist by the name of Otis Milburn, who establishes his own improvised therapy school. He teams up with Maeve Wiley, a clever student, to help their schoolmates resolve their relationship and intimacy issues. This series explores a wide range of subjects related to se*uality, identity, and growing up with humour and compassion. Otis and Maeve develop complicated feelings for each other over several seasons despite various obstacles and miscommunications keeping them apart. Their friendship forms the emotional core of the series.

Otis and Maeve finally admit to one another that they like each other in the rain during Season 3, Episode 7 of the show, and have their first kiss. This scene is depicted with them being honest about their desire to be intimate with one another, and a passionate kiss is shot against a backdrop of rain falling around them. This Otis-Maeve rain kiss takes a very close resemblance to the famed scene in Heartstopper Season 1 Episode 4 when Nick appears in the rain at the house of Charlie to apologise, and they both kiss under an umbrella.

3. Skam (2015)

Skam is a Norwegian teen drama that features different protagonists through its four seasons. It centres on Isak Valtersen, a teenage boy. He struggles with his se*uality and the fear of being open to people about who he really is. Isak meets Even, an older boy who is confident in himself and openly gay. The more time they spend together, the more Isak develops feelings for Even. Their relationship is evident in secret meetings and candid discussions about life and identity. In Season 3 Episode 4, they share a kiss in a hotel pool after spending time with him and getting closer.

This intimate moment shows Isak finally embracing his feelings and accepting who he is. Later in the season, he comes out to his parents and friends, who offer their support. Isak and Even's relationship development closely mirrors what transpires in Heartstopper Season 2, where Charlie confesses to Nick, and they begin their relationship together. Both series present young men discovering their se*uality through meeting someone who helps them accept themselves fully.

2. Love, Victor (2020)

Love, Victor is a Hulu original show that is based on Victor Salazar, a new student at Creekwood High who attempts to determine his identity and se*uality. Victor meets Benji at a local coffee shop where he works, and he is immediately attracted to him.

Victor is unsure about his se*uality, though, and begins dating a girl named Mia just to hide his true feelings. Victor and Benji will eventually become close friends because of the time they spend together; however, Victor struggles with his feelings while keeping his secret. Throughout Season One, Victor and Benji dance around their feelings amidst a range of complicated life issues.

Finally, during the dance portion in Season 1 Episode 10, called the Spring Fling, Victor breaks up with Mia and kisses Benji in a very public way. The two share several kisses that night, and Benji asks Victor if he is ready to come out about being gay. Victor says yes and later tells his family he is gay. This was a powerful public kiss moment that strongly resembles Heartstopper Season 1 Episode 8, when Nick finally introduces Charlie as his boyfriend to literally everyone on the beach. The two scenes demonstrate how both characters boast about their relationships with other people after overcoming fear and secrecy.

1. Young Royals (2021)

Young Royals is a Swedish drama set in an expensive boarding secondary school in Sweden called Hillerska, attended by Prince Wilhelm of Sweden. Until Wilhelm meets with Simon Eriksson, a brilliant composer at the school, it appears that the former is living the ideal royal life. Wilhelm gets attracted to Simon, and they start dating clandestinely. The bond between them is strengthened by their intimate conversations and time spent together, free from the scrutiny of others.

In Season 1, Episode 4, Wilhelm and Simon share their first kiss during a film night at school. It is also a moment of great intimacy, and Wilhelm does not say anything, only expresses his emotions through looks and kind caresses, and then they kiss each other. The kiss is during a movie in the background, creating an intimate moment between them. This scene, depicting Wilhelm and Simon in silence kissing one another, reminds the viewer of Heartstopper Season 1, Episode 3, when Nick and Charlie have their first kiss in the school alley. Both episodes absolutely capture the excitement and the feeling of panic when one or the other young couple is on their first real kiss with a person they love and have a deep passion for.
