Spin-offs usually come with the burden of matching the quality of their main shows, though, at times, they even go beyond and create something new. The shows are set with the same characters or the same world, still, the creators offer something different; old plots but hotter feelings or larger laughs. Throughout the years, many such shows have caught the audience by surprise by being even more popular and gaining more critical acclaim than the originals.

The characters were deeply loved by the audience, the producers and creators of the shows won awards, and these shows shaped the television industry in their own unique ways. This article lists seven such TV spins that did not simply follow the originals but rather completely outshined them.

Better Call Saul narrates the transformation of Jimmy McGill into the brilliant yet so troubled lawyer called Saul Goodman. Unlike Breaking Bad, which was fast and explosive this show took its time with emotions, choices, and the consequences thereof. It ended in 2022 after six amazing seasons and garnered huge praise for its finale episodes.

What kept it unique was that the show did not just replicate its origin but created its own world and tone. One of the greatest spins ever made, Bob Odenkirk's stellar acting, coupled with the strong writing, places it among the very best of them.

Frasier (Spin-off of Cheers)

Frasier followed the story of Dr. Frasier Crane, who left Boston for a new life in Seattle, became a radio show host, and rebuilt his relationship with his father and brother. The show aired from 1993 to 2004 and won a record number of Emmy Awards.

In 2023, a revival brought Frasier back to Boston to reconnect with his grown up son, giving fans a modern take on the classic. The essence of what made Frasier special was its sharp wit, warmth of family, and well-developed character arcs, proving that sometimes, a spin-off can be brighter than the original.

The Simpsons first appeared as brief sketches on The Tracey Ullman Show in 1987 and later became a full series in 1989. The doodles of a family that initially made up the show transformed into the world's longest animated sitcom in the genre. The show has gone through changes and has reflected the society and even the politics of the day, albeit, with humor.

It was through its ability to be in tune with the times that this spin not only became a cultural icon but also a great source of entertainment that was even larger than its small start.

Poignant storylines and undaunted tackling of real-life issues cemented it into the minds of viewers. The series revolves around powerful characters such as Olivia Benson whose leadership and compassion dictated its character.

Even at 25 years old, SVU evolves with each case and social awareness. Still going strong in 2025 it is NBC's longest running scripted drama in history a testament to a mix that seems not to grow old-justice, humanity, and heart which keeps them coming back year after year.

Initially created in 2017, The Good Fight was a spin-off of The Good Wife, but it soon forged an identity all its own. It followed Diane Lockhart, a lawyer who loses everything and has to start afresh at a new firm. What made it special, though was how it handled some really modern issues like politics, race, and technology with such courage and humor.

Sharp writing and some very bold storylines managed to make it fresh and current at any moment. Ending in 2022 after six seasons, The Good Fight stands as one of those rare spin-offs that proved sharper, braver, and even more powerful than the original series.

Angel furthered the story of the vampire Angel who after leaving Sunnydale moved to Los Angeles to help people and fight the forces of darkness. After its premiere in 1999 the series combined action, emotional scenes, and moral crises in a fascinating way.

The darker tone and intricate plotlines placed it in a category of its own. According to many fans, Angel matured beyond Buffy and developed far more deep themes and amazing characters. Its blend of mystery, heart, and action made Angel one of the most successful fantasy spin-offs ever created.

Xena: Warrior Princess follows Xena, a warrior without peer, who sets about making amends for her dark past. With her friend Gabrielle in tow, the duo fought evil across the ancient lands.

Xena was an icon for pop culture and sparked the female action heroes on TV since then. It dealt with deeper issues than just a show about adventure, friendship, and strength on the inside. Xena: Warrior Princess proved that a spin-off could completely outshine the original.

Spin-off creation is always a challenge, but these series' successes showed that it can actually lead to something magical. In each case, an old concept was successfully transformed into a new story that could attract its own audience.

New places were invented, new characters were created, and in some cases, the new ones were even more appreciated than the originals. They are a reminder that excellent narratives can develop, give unexpected turns, and illuminate in an even more powerful way when they are retold.
