1) Alvin Olinsky's death

One of the most devastating moments in life is losing a best friend, and the level of heartbreak it causes was seen through the eyes of Hank Voight. Alvin Olinsky was a detective in the Chicago P.D. Intelligence Unit and Hank Voight's right-hand man, best friend, and moral anchor. He is arrested when his DNA is found near the body of Kevin Bingham, a man killed by Voight for killing his son.
The unexpected twist came when Olinsky was stabbed by Andre Gomez in prison before Voight could get him out of prison. He died in the hospital from excessive blood loss, with Voight tearfully telling him to "hang on." Watching Hank break down sobbing at the loss of his best friend was raw and unforgettable.
2) Erin Lindsay leaving

Erin Lindsay was the heart and soul of the Chicago P.D. team for many years. She came with a sketchy past, but with her strong personality, loyalty, and fierce nature, she won over the unit and the fans' hearts. Unfortunately, she had to leave the unit and join the FBI's New York Counter-Terrorism Bureau.
She had to do it to save her mom. She joined the force in exchange for her mom's freedom after she was found in possession of pills stolen by her boyfriend and his friends. She vanished without saying goodbye to anyone, not even Jay. Her exit left a massive hole in the show.
3) Justin's murder

Justin Voight was Hank Voight's troubled son. He was constantly at a stand-off with the law, and Hank did everything to protect his son. After celebrating his son's first birthday, Justin was found tied up in the trunk of a car with a shot to his head. He is still alive and rushed to a hospital where the doctors tell Hank that there is no chance of his survival, and even if there is, his life won't be the same.
Hank reluctantly agrees to take his son off life support and then tracks the man who is responsible for Justin's death. After tracking the man, Kevin Bingham, down, he shoots him.
4) Antonio Dawson's spiraling downhill

Antonio Dawson was the second-in-command to Hank Voight at Chicago P.D. and was the team leader during Hank's absence. He was known for his composure and generally calm nature and was the moral compass of the entire unit. He injured his shoulder while breaking down a door and soon became addicted to painkillers.
This became the beginning of his downward spiral, and he soon found it hard to keep it together and lost control. His addiction takes centre stage when a criminal kidnaps his daughter, and Antonio beats him up and pushes him out of the window to his death.
At this point, Hank covers up the murder and advises Antonio to go to rehab. Eventually, Antonio quits and moves to Puerto Rico in hopes of getting family help.
5) Ruzek and Burgess lost their baby

Adam Ruzek and Kim Burgess are both members of the Chicago P.D. Intelligence Unit. Besides that, they have been in an on-again, off-again relationship, which takes new heights when Kim discovers that he is pregnant with Ruzek's child, giving hope of reconciliation to their fans.
After telling the unit about her pregnancy, she is assigned light duty at the 911 call center. During one of these calls, she encounters a young girl who is trapped in a sex trafficking ring. She takes special interest in the case and goes to the motel room where the girl is held.
After getting into a physical fight with the suspect, she sustains serious injuries and is rushed to the hospital, and loses the child. Watching her sob helplessly in Ruzek's arms was shattering. Although their bond didn't break because of the incident but it did leave a scar on them.
6) Jay Halstead leaving

Jason 'Jay' Halstead was the star of Chicago P.D. He was loyal, righteous, dedicated, and never hesitated to do the right thing. Besides his principled character, his slow-burning romance with Hailey Upton was the main focus of the show. Spoiler Alert! They eventually did get married.
But things take a drastic turn when Jay abruptly leaves for Bolivia for an Army mission. He left without saying goodbye to anyone, not even a call or a text to Hailey, leaving everyone stunned. His radio silence gets the best of Hailey, and she goes through excruciating stages of grief.
7) Alvin Olinsky's letter to Hank Voight

Alvin Olinsky was a loyal friend, and it was shown through his tenure on Chicago P.D., but his loyalty transcended death and brought peace to Hank even after he was gone. Hank received a letter after Olinsky's death, written by him, and its content will even make rocks cry.
Basically, in the letter, he forgave Hank and reaffirmed their friendship, even though Hank was the reason for his death. This shows Alvin's big heart and compassionate nature. The poor guy was loving and loyal till the end. As Hank read the letter, he couldn't hold back his tears, and neither could anyone watching. It was twisting the knife in Hank's wound all over again.
8) Kevin Atwater's struggles

Kevin Atwater was one of the Chicago P.D. Intelligence Unit's strongest members who stood tall morally, emotionally, and professionally. But even after being part of the police force, he always struggled with systemic racism and was always finding himself in a position where he was either a policeman or a black man.
In one of the episodes, he is forced to turn in a fellow cop for a racially charged shooting, and although he did the right thing, he is shunned, targeted, and harassed by other cops. He faces the harassment bravely, but the heartbreaking real pain is visible through his eyes, exhaustion, and loneliness.
Chicago P.D. is real and dark, and never shies away from breaking the hearts of its fans with its stories. These 8 moments didn't just break everyone's hearts; they left everyone shattered. And the worst part is they make it as real as possible; they don't like sugarcoating anything.
