8 Simple Rules is an ABC sitcom that came out on September 17, 2002, and featured John Ritter as the father, Paul Hennessy, Katey Sagal as his wife, Cate, and the three kids: Bridget (Kaley Cuoco), Kerry (Amy Davidson), and Rory (Martin Spanjers).

The father set the tone for humor and strict dating rules for his teenage daughters, all against the backdrop of relatable family life and parental challenges.

The first season’s events, which concentrated on the ups and downs of adolescent children in a loving family, were the basis for the second season, which was characterized by poignancy due to the sudden and real-life death of John Ritter.

The second season, which started in late 2003, goes on to tackle the grief of the family after the death of Paul Hennessy. The plot shows how Cate, now a single mother, and her children cope with life without their father.

Among the new characters introduced in this season are Cate’s father, Jim (James Garner), and her nephew, C.J. (David Spade), who are both a source of support and energy for the family and the show. This season is considered one of the best for its truthful and sensitive depiction of death and survival, as it manages to bring together comedy with drama even more, while the family is getting used to their new situation and still keeping communication through their relationships.

Season 2 of 8 Simple Rules begins with Bridget navigating the highs and lows of teenage love. Her long-distance relationship with Donny is beginning to weaken, which, ironically, makes her less popular at school, while Kerry is soaring on the social scene with her new love for Kyle. Just when Bridget believes she can withstand the typical teenage drama, her eyes are caught by a new, handsome student, Damien, and hence, tension erupts in her love life.

Back home, Cate is in a panic, waiting anxiously for the result of a pregnancy test and annoyed by her children's self-absorbed attitudes. In a surprising turn, she finds an unlikely support in her odd next-door neighbors, the Doyles.

Cate’s life as a mom and teacher continues to be a balancing act. In the 8 Simple Rules Episode, Sex Ed, she comes across an alarming submission by a student about an older boyfriend pushing her for s*x, only to discover Bridget turns out to be the culprit, trying to disguise her own curiosity.

Meanwhile, the Hennessys get their dose of comedy as a video postcard for Donny backfires in the episode Donny Goes AWOL. In the episode, Donny hitchhikes all the way to the Hennessys in a pig truck, only to learn Bridget is seeing Damien, while Rory's neighborhood escapades cause havoc in mischievous ways.

The 8 Simple Rules season turns heart-wrenching in the episode Goodbye, when Paul collapses and dies in an unexpected accident. The Hennessys are shocked into grief, with Cate unable to sleep by herself and Bridget tormented by her last words to her dad. The family finds comfort in Paul's last newspaper article, an emotional reminder that family ties stay unbroken no matter what conflict or loss comes their way.

The next episodes of 8 Simple Rules delve into how each child copes with the loss: Bridget attempts to move ahead, Kerry keeps a low profile, and Rory refuses to engage in basketball, until Cate presses him to carry on in his dad’s name. In their first Thanksgiving without Paul (The First Thanksgiving), Rory steps up as the man of the house, flailing at turkey carving and household tasks, bringing some laughs to an otherwise somber occasion.

Bridget gets older and wiser in The Story of Anne Frank and Skeevy, playing the lead in the school play as Kerry struggles with jealousy over minor parts. Under the guidance of Cate, Bridget pours her heart into an amazing performance that has her family grinning from ear to ear. At home, Rory gets his hands on a ventriloquist's dummy and keeps the family in stitches.

Later, Bridget lands a lifeguarding gig at the YMCA, and the whole family gets dragged into a series of classes that cause sibling rivalry and embarrassing moments of awkwardness for Rory. C.J., Cate's nephew, shows up in Get Real, doling out dirty love advice and getting into mischief at home, and Rory's antics continue in Consequences, where he steals a police dog by mistake and finds marijuana in Kerry's backpack, then panics before all gets sorted out.

Romance and teen drama are back with Valentine's Day in the Opposites Attract trilogy, in which Bridget falls for geeky Jeremy only to experience heartbreak, while Kerry copes with an unplanned move by Kyle. Meanwhile, C.J. and Rory capitalize on school technology to broadcast pranks, and Jim embarks upon a flirtation with PTA's Ms. McKenna. Cate, prompted by a family counselor, at last gets to sing in the production of Daddy's Girl, giving a musical twist to the family's odyssey.

The Hennessys’ daily chaos continues with mall jobs, online sales, and C.J.’s over-the-top security enforcement in 8 Simple Rules Episode Mall in the Family. In Let’s Keep Going, Bridget and Kerry resist their mother’s plans to visit Grandma Laura, unwittingly embarking on a road trip that reconnects the family to cherished memories. C.J.’s Party brings more comedic chaos as Cate tries to keep the household in order while Grandpa humorously attempts to cheat on Kerry’s driving test.

Season 2 concludes with the finales, Finalé Part One and Finalé Part Two, while Cate manages Principal Gibb and Jim's love advances, Kerry puts on a school protest, and Bridget steps up to shield her sister's trip to Europe. She wins as student body president, and the family readies a father-son road trip to Florida with Rory, accompanied surprisingly by C.J.

In episodes of laughter, teenage angst, and poignant milestones, the Hennessys' resilience shines in 8 Simple Rules Season 2.

The majority of 8 Simple Rules Season 3 is about the emotional fallout from Season 2 events. The family is still shown grieving through their journey, and the change in tone is towards healing and acceptance of change.

Cate deals with new people coming into her life, which is her way of moving on while still honoring the family's past. All the teens have to cope with the usual teenage drama, but it is made worse by the loss they just suffered: Kerry learns to deal with the changes in her character that have come about after the summer in Europe, Bridget is balancing her popularity and love interests, and Rory is still the family prankster.

Involvement of the extended family gives support that is of great importance, with Grandpa Jim and C.J. often taking part in the family activities and storylines. Though 8 Simple Rules Season 3 is less directly about sorrow, the impact of Paul's death is still felt, and it is the main factor that directs the characters' decisions and growth through the whole season.

8 Simple Rules was cancelled in May 2005 by ABC after its third season, which ended with Ditch Day airing on April 15, 2005. The show suffered a decrease in viewership after John Ritter's passing and was also affected by the creative ups and downs, so it was not renewed for Season 4.
