Athena distracts herself with a new obsession in 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 16
Bobby’s death most naturally affects Athena the most, and she is shown to be in complete denial in this episode. The fact that Bobby’s body has still not been released makes her tell herself that this is not the end. In her mind, delaying the funeral would mean delaying having to accept the fact that Bobby is gone and will never be coming back.
While she is struggling so much with her grief and the inability to process it, something comes along the way that distracts her for a while. As a man comes looking for Bobby at Firehouse 118, Athena invests herself in his case to keep herself busy and not get drowned in the enormous tragedy that had just hit them.
The man tells Athena that years ago, Bobby had saved the man’s sister Leah from a fire but was unable to do the same for her infant son. A few years later, Leah was sure that his son had been taken from her and was confident that he had been raised by a different set of parents in Santa Clarita.
The boy, whom Leah thinks to be her son Micah, is named Cameron, and besides the stark similarity in how they look, Leah also claimed that Cameron had the birthmark that Micah had, which made her certain that he was indeed her son. This argument makes Athena believe that Leah is perhaps right, and she gets further involved in the case.
Athena goes as far as digging up Micah’s grave, but unfortunately, cannot find any remains there. This leads to the revelation that the fire had destroyed the infant’s body, and nothing was left. This truth was kept hidden from Leah at the time of the tragedy, which made her think that her child was perhaps still alive.
The conclusion of this case draws Athena back to reality, and she realizes she has not been dealing with her grief and has been distracting herself. She eventually comes to terms with what has happened and prepares for the funeral after choosing a place for Bobby’s burial.

Chimney struggles hard to accept Bobby’s death in 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 16
Another person who is shown to be struggling equally hard as Athena is Chimney. He was the one with Bobby in the lab when the accident happened, and he was given the last antidote after which Bobby revealed that he was also affected and showing the symptoms.
Chimney lashes out badly at Gerrard, and he also seems to be a changed person who shows more empathy and understanding. Finally, when the funeral day arrives, Chimney is found by Bucky on the roof of Firehouse 118 and drinking Vodka.
As Chimney tells Bucky that he does not understand what to do with his life now that it feels Bobby sacrificed for him, Bucky tells him to live it properly for himself and his family, as that is what Bobby would have certainly wanted.
