ABC's beloved fire procedural finally returned on the small screen with 9-1-1 Season 9. The premiere titled Eat the Rich started strong with a humpback whale attack, which culminated in an exciting space adventure for Hen.
Episode 1 saw the 118 being called into action when Tripp Houser (Riverdale’s Mark Consuelos guest stars), a billionaire, is swallowed by a whale. While Chimeny's impressive thinking and Eddie's diving skills got the whale to spit the man out, he was not breathing when brought to land. Thanks to Hen's CPR, Tripp finally came back to life and just like that, the 118 saved the day once again.
Being the first outing without Peter Krause's Bobby Nash, 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 1 was an emotional watch but 118's beloved captain was duly honored in the premiere by his co-workers.
Here is the complete 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 1 recap.
The 118 honors Bobby in 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 1
While ABC's procedural has always been a comfort watch for its fans, 9-1-1 Season 9 was bound to be a different outing, being the first after Bobby's death. Captain Bobby was not just a leader who commanded his firefighters and paramedics, but he was the glue that made Station 118 into a family. His death definitely had a huge impact on his team, but the show must go on. After Chimney's passionate speech in the Season 8 finale, he was serving as the interim captain in 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 1.
In the Season 9 premiere, the 118 honors Bobby by dedicating a plaque to his name and renaming the firehouse in his memory. While the ceremony was emotional, Bobby's co-workers were worried for Athena, who was suspiciously absent from the ceremony. Ever since her husband's death, Athena has drowned herself in work and has burned herself out. It turns out, during Bobby's plaque ceremony, she was working on a sting operation, but just when she was about to make the arrest, the FBI swooped in and took over her case.
The betrayal stung Athena, but her boss saw it as a blessing in disguise because it was time for her to catch her breath. She was assigned a desk duty, which did not excite Athena. Bobby's widow finally agreed on light duty.
Hen's exciting space mission in 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 1
Looks like saving a billionaire's life will earn you a free ticket to space, as Hen was offered to go into space by Tripp Hauser in return for saving his life in 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 1. She was even allowed to take a plus one with her, which naturally brought her to her scientist wife. However, Karen rejected the offer because she believes that Hauser is an unserious science guy and her company is literally suing the billionaire and there is no way that she could accompany Hen on her space mission.
While all the 118 men were eager to accompany Hen to space, and they even competed against each other for the position, the paramedic knew who could use a little space excursion the most at the moment. It was her best friend, Athena.
Athena realized that she had spiralled out of control after Bobby's death and was not even able to look after her kids, Harry and May. In her grief, she did not even realize that Harry had dropped out of high school and was working as a barista at a local coffee shop to make enough money and move out. It was when her children finally called her out that she realized that she had not been herself lately. That is when she expressed her loneliness to Hen and her best friend invited her to the exciting space mission.
With everything set, Hen and Athena are suited up for this space adventure in 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 1, which will certainly go haywire in the upcoming episodes.
9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 1 is streaming on Hulu.
