9-1-1 Season 8 featured one of the most heartbreaking moments of the show as Robert "Bobby" Nash, played by Peter Krause, said goodbye to the audience after eight long years.

The LAFD Station 118 captain died after being exposed to a virus while trying to protect his team. The incident shocked fans as no one expected the lead to be killed off the show suddenly.

Now that 9-1-1 Season 9 is gearing up for its premiere, Oliver Stark, who plays Evan "Buck" Buckley, has talked about how Bobby Nash’s death will continue to affect the first responders' team in the upcoming episodes. In an interview with Deadline, the actor revealed that grief will be an important theme in the new season, as the team deals with the aftermath of Bobby’s death. He said:

“I don’t think it’s an overall down feeling of the show, I think it’s looking to move forward, but in a way that is respectful to the memory of the Bobby Nash character and finding creative ways for him to still haunt the narrative.”

Oliver Stark added that just like real life, there will be times in 9-1-1 Season 9 when the characters will feel like they have moved on from the tragedy. However, as healing takes time, the grief will keep striking them. He elaborated:

“I think it’s not gonna be a linear path of healing, as I don’t think grief is. There are episodes that maybe feel lighter and like we’re moving directly past it, and then, as grief does, it sneaks up on you again.”

When Bobby died in 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 15, fans could not believe that the character had been killed off. The audience felt that the plot twist came out of nowhere and criticized the creators for it. Stark opened up about the backlash during the interview and said that television’s motive is to evoke emotions, and that is exactly what the show has succeeded in doing:

“I think that’s the point, is to feel hurt and upset and to invest in things and to feel happy in some episodes and sad in other episodes, you know; that is the point in making any form of television or any movie is that you want people to go on a roller coaster of emotions.”

Stark added:

“And, for me, if people are hurt by the actions that are meant to feel painful, then it means that we’re on the right path and doing the right thing, so I thank them for their investment.”

9-1-1 Season 9 is set to debut on ABC on October 9, 2025. The season will focus on the team as they cope with Bobby’s death while also saving lives on some high-stakes rescue missions. While Peter Krause is not returning as Bobby, the rest of the main cast members are reprising their roles in the upcoming chapter.

Apart from Oliver Stark, the show stars Angela Bassett as Athena Grant-Nash, Kenneth Choi as Howard "Chimney" Han, Aisha Hinds as Henrietta "Hen" Wilson, Jennifer Love Hewitt as Maddie Han, Ryan Guzman as Edmundo "Eddie" Díaz, Corinne Massiah as May Grant, Gavin McHugh as Christopher "Chris" Díaz, and Elijah M. Cooper as Harry Grant.

9-1-1 Season 9 will premiere on October 9, 2025, and will air new episodes weekly.
