9. Catelyn Stark

Catelyn Stark was murdered on June 2, 2013, during the 3rd season of Game of Thrones. The episode The Rains of Castamere, much famous for the shocking moment when Catelyn dies, is still remembered as one of the most appalling moments in the history of TV shows. She was killed in the Red Wedding that was full of treachery and murder. She saw her son Robb being stabbed by Roose Bolton, who, in a sadistic fashion, told her that the Lannisters had a good day. She has tried to rescue Robb, intimidating the wife of Walder Frey without success.

Then, Black Walder Rivers slitted her throat right there in the wedding feast. It felt unjust because she was a wise mother and gave good counsel throughout the series. A lot of Game of Thrones fans resented the fact that she had so much more narration to cover, and her death simply silenced another voice in the Northern kingdom. Her demise ruined the hopes of House Stark to take revenge on the Lannisters, as it happened during this period.

8. Ygritte

Ygritte was killed in season 4 of Game of Thrones. The episode The Watchers on the Wall was broadcast in 2014, and the raging battle of Castle Black was a part of it. She had been shot during the battle by an arrow. The young boy who shot Ygritte is Olly. In the series, Ygritte has participated in the murder of his family, recorded earlier in the series. Jon Snow was powerless and could not stop the woman he loved from falling to the ground. She was dying, and she even stared at the eyes of Jon, which made this moment already tragic and very heartbreaking.

Her death felt rather unnecessary for many fans because she and Jon had such a powerful love story that could have continued. This had been one of those moments where two enemies could find love in the harsh world. Game of Thrones took away one of the few warm and authentic relationships Jon Snow had ever known in his austere life at the Wall in the process of killing Ygritte.

7. Khal Drogo

Khal Drogo was killed in Season 1, Episode 10 of Game of Thrones. The season 1 finale showed us that Drogo died gradually from an infected wound. He injured himself in a battle, and a woman called Mirri Maz Durr volunteered to heal him. However, Mirri was really seeking revenge against Drogo and his people. She brought Drogo into an enchanted sleep where he never woke up. Daenerys discovered him in a coma and knew that he preferred to die instead of surviving as a powerless human being. She mercifully killed him using a pillow.

The death of Drogo seems redundant since he was a strong person with a significant tale. He represented strength and leadership among the Dothraki people. His death eliminated the father of the child of Daenerys before its birth, which also made her journey much more difficult and lonely as she grew up.

6. Lyanna Mormont

Lyanna Mormont was killed in the TV series Game of Thrones during the 8th season, 3rd episode. In 2019, the episode was aired where the battle was seen between the White Walkers and Winterfell. Lyanna was a young girl and the one who was leading a small army, which was situated in the North. She bravely fought when a giant wight crushed her in the middle of the battle. She succeeded even in death in thrusting her needle into the eye of the giant and killing it when she died.

Game of Thrones fans thought her death was a waste since she was a favourite character, symbolising hope and courage to the North. She was among the handful of good and honourable in the story. The death of her character in this story eliminated a powerful female ruler, when the North had to have powerful voices. Many viewers felt that her young age and limited screen time made her death unnecessary to the larger story.

5. Oberyn Martell

Oberyn Martell was killed in the Game of Thrones episode, The Mountain and the Viper. This episode was broadcast in 2014 and showed a battle between Oberyn and a huge fighter called the Mountain. Oberyn was a fighter of Tyrion Lannister, and the best opportunity was to gain as a winner in this game. During the fight, Oberyn was able to outsmart the Mountain and drive the latter to the floor. But instead of killing the enemy, Oberyn was against the Mountain, and he confessed that he killed his sister, Elia, as well as her children. He relaxed his guard to persuade him to confess. He was killed by the Mountain with his two huge fists, crushing the head of Oberyn Martell.

Game of Thrones viewers thought that his death was absolutely unnecessary, as he could have won the fight. His urging for a confession instead of a victory made him die painfully, and pained everybody who watched it. In this way, this demise removed another exciting personality, passionate and desiring justice, in the story of Westeros.

4. Tommen Baratheon

In the Game of Thrones season 6 episode, The Winds of Winter, Tommen Baratheon was killed. This episode aired in June 2016, and it unveiled the sad end of the young king. In his bedroom, Tomassen was sitting, and through the window, he could view his mother, Cersei, lighting the Great Sept of Baelor on fire using wildfire. Hundreds of people were killed in the blast, including his wife, Margaery Tyrell.

Telling Tommen that Margaery was dead, one of the servants added that he was so sorry. Tommen said nothing. He quietly brought off the crown and flung it on the table. Then he reaches out the open window and throws himself, falling to his death. His suicide in Game of Thrones is historic, because he was a good and naive boy, who could not be left alone by all people. His death deprived Westeros of one of its few kind-hearted rulers, and showed the tragic cost of Cersei’s ambition.

3. Rickon Stark

In Game of Thrones, Rickon Stark was killed in Season 6 episode 9. This happened in June of 2016 when Jon Snow and Ramsay Bolton were at war. Rickon was taken captive sometime in the previous season and sold by the Umber family to Ramsay. As the battle commences, Ramsay frees Rickon and orders him to run up to his brother Jon. Ramsay fires arrows at him as he carries on running across the battlefield. Rickon is jogging in a straight line rather than swerving or swerving.

Jon is about to reach him when he is eventually hit in the back by one of the arrows of Ramsay. His death in Game of Thrones was absolutely redundant, since he had never been given a single opportunity to develop as a character during the show. He could have lived by running in a different pattern and not on a straight ahead as many fans must have known.

2. Missandei

In the Game of Thrones episode, The Last of the Starks, Missandei was killed. The episode aired in May 2019 in the last season of the show. Missandei is captured when the fleet of Euron Greyjoy assaults Daenerys and her army off Dragonstone. Cersei puts Missandei into chains at King's Landing and attempts to use her as a bargaining tool against Daenerys. After negotiations fail outside the city walls, Cersei orders the Mountain to execute Missandei in front of everyone

In her last moment, Missandei yelled, "Dracarys", or dragon fire in High Valyrian. The Mountain beheads her as Grey Worm and Daenerys witnessed the scene quite helplessly. Her death does not have a purpose, as it only helps Daenerys to get furious to the point of destroying the King's Lands. Missandei did not get the treatment she deserved, as she was a close friend and advisor.

1. Shireen Baratheon

In the Game of Thrones episode The Dance of Dragons, Shireen Baratheon was killed. This episode was aired in June 2015, and it shocked the world audience. She was the small girl, daughter of Stannis Baratheon, who was heading his troops to invade Winterfell. When his army was trapped in a snowstorm, Melisandre convinced Stannis that he must sacrifice someone of royal blood to win the war. Stannis chose to kill his daughter, Shireen.

Shireen adored her father and fully believed in him, although numerous people warned her of his presumably behaviour. Shireen was chained to a wooden post and burnt alive as she screamed at her parents to come and rescue her. Her death felt pointless because Stannis did not do anything helpful afterwards. Most of his soldiers left him, and his wife later took her own life by hanging. Shireen was definitely one of the saddest TV deaths to date.
