Marvel Zombies unveiled a haunting new poster that is thrilling and somewhat spooky at the same time. It features Wanda Maximoff, aka Scarlet Witch, once again portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen, appearing not at all like the depressed hero we last saw in WandaVision. Rather, she is a strong, undead queen who appears to be prepared to conquer the end of the world.

One thing is clear about the promotion: it is not a nostalgic journey down memory lane. It is a darker, horror-type version where Scarlet Witch is the center of the madness.

Already, fans and blogs are referring to her as the Dead Queen, and the red-tinted artwork makes the entire show feel a bit scary and Halloween-like.

What the new Marvel Zombies poster tells us

The visual language of the new Marvel Zombies poster tells you half the story. Solemn reds, shadowy figures, and the whole composition make Wanda look like she's on an ominous throne of foreboding silence. Even if you took a one-second glance at the poster on social media, the message is crystal clear: this Scarlet Witch is an object of fear and power and not a victimized supporting character.

It is a smart way of reminding fans about Wanda's past. Those who adored her complex character are now teased with a version in Marvel Zombies in which her reality-altering abilities bring about danger and tragedy rather than solace. The style also sets the mood. At least this is no ordinary superhero film of PG-13 level.

You can look forward to loud horror, dark comedy, and impressive visuals. It is not only a powerful strike at marketing, but it seems that this poster is a promise of its own: a familiar hero transformed into something frightening, which increases the stakes for any heroes who are going to challenge someone capable of changing the very face of reality itself.

Casting, stakes, and fan reaction

Placing Wanda, portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen, at the core of Marvel Zombies alters the entire tone of the show. Wanda has already experienced profound sorrow, excessive guilt, and dangerous power outbursts. It is that history that makes her role as the Dead Queen real and meaningful, rather than merely another villain.

It has been reported that Marvel Zombies is not dealing with her appearance as a cameo. Rather, the decision to bring Olsen back is a major creative choice whereby the story will demonstrate how a person with chaos magic could trigger a zombie apocalypse.

Behind the camera, there are writer Zeb Wells and director Bryan Andrews at the helm of the project, and it is likely that many of the recognizable MCU voices will be back. This is an indication of a series that combines realistic emotion with the uninhibited, bloody thrill of a TV-MA zombie adventure. People are eager to have Olsen back and are also wondering how Marvel Zombies will juxtapose Wanda's heartbreak with the action-packed storyline.

What this might mean for the MCU

Already, the rumors and leaks give us an idea that we will witness zombie versions of known Marvel characters, with Okoye and other heroes having unexpected roles as either soldiers or as leaders in Wanda’s undead army. It appears that Marvel Zombies is based on the "What If…?" episode, which initially explored a zombie-infested Marvel world, but this time it appears to be darker, more intense, and much more violent and gory.

This arrangement allows Marvel to include fun cameos and revive the voices of familiar characters without causing discontinuity to the live-action timeline. It also allows heroes to do something that they were not able to do in the original films.

Meanwhile, it is an experiment: will Marvel be able to incorporate real horror into the narrative and retain the heart that makes characters such as Wanda so potent? Up to this point, the haunted poster, casting hints, and the dark comedy in the promos of Marvel Zombies all indicate they are prepared to roll that dice. Provided the trailer and the episodes deliver what they promise, we could have a new must-watch show by Halloween.
