Melissa Fumero, popularly known for playing Amy Santiago on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, recently played a lead character in Grosse Pointe Garden Society. The show was released on 23rd February 2025 on NBC and revolved around four members of a garden club who seem innocent but get involved in a murder.
While the show’s story, cast, and characters were great, it did not get enough ratings for a season two. Deadline reported that NBC has thus cancelled the show. After Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Grosse Pointe Garden Society is the third show where Fumero has played a lead role. The character she played, Birdie, was sassy, fashionable, and had layers.
However, the show’s cancellation has prevented fans from seeing Birdie in future seasons. Following the cancellation, Fumero reflected on the show and her role in a Threads post.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Melissa Fumero on Grosse Pointe Garden Society getting cancelled
Grosse Pointe Garden Society focused on four main characters: Alice, Brett, Catherine, and Birdie. The show’s official logline reads:
When four members of a suburban garden club get entangled in a scandalous murder, they’re forced to bury the body – in their own well-manicured flower beds. In this juicy new drama from the creators of "Good Girls," everyone's got dirt… but some secrets never stay buried.
Melissa Fumero plays a completely different role in this show compared to her role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. She plays Birdie, a rich author who is initially portrayed as toxic but is later revealed to have a soft heart. She has written the book Digging for Gold: Dancing Through Divorce and joins the Garden Club to complete her community service for crashing into a fountain. The character goes through several ups and downs and is a major point of interest in the show.
Other than Melissa Fumero as Birdie, Grosse Pointe Garden Society stars Aja Naomi King as Catherine, Ben Rappaport as Brett, AnnaSophia Robb as Alice, Matthew Davis as Joel, Alexander Hodge as Doug, Nancy Travis as Patty, and Felix Wolfe as Ford. The show was created by Jenna Bans and has thirteen episodes that aired from 23rd February 2025 to 16th May 2025.
The cancellation came despite positive feedback from some viewers about the show’s fresh approach. Brooklyn Nine-Nine fans saw Fumero take on a very different role, but the show will not return for future seasons. This has also affected Fumero. She took to Threads to express her love for the character and to thank viewers for watching Grosse Pointe Garden Society. She said:
Oh, Birdie. You were one for the books. You felt like an amalgamation of every role I’ve ever played. I’ll miss so many things about this job, but most of all I will miss the incredible group of humans it brought together. I won’t miss the shoes. 👠It’s really hard to make a show. Even harder to keep it on air. I’ll forever be proud of what we made. Thanks for watching. 💖💐🥀🥀🥀

At present, no other platform has announced plans to continue the show, Grosse Pointe Garden Society, after NBC’s cancellation. You can still watch the first season of the show on Peacock. If you love Melissa Fumero’s performances, you can also check out Brooklyn Nine-Nine on Peacock and Blockbuster on Netflix.
