With the ever-expanding universes of Psych and Monk, fans are expecting to see a crossover between the two detective shows finally.

Created by Steve Franks, Psych debuted in 2006, building on the foundations laid by its predecessor series, Monk, which premiered in 2002. The show follows Shawn Spencer (James Roday Rodriguez), who pretends to be a psychic to help the Santa Barbara Police Department on cases.

Quirky and witty in its storytelling, the series is heavily inspired by Andy Breckman's Monk, which follows Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), an eccentric former detective who uses his abilities to solve cases.

Since their respective conclusions, both shows have expanded into movie franchises with the same cast and crew. And with recent talks about Psych 4, a Monk crossover might be on the cards.

More on the detective procedurals' possible crossover in our story.

The Psych Season 8 finale had a subtle Monk reference

While the two shows and their respective quirky detectives have never officially shared screens, except for US promos, people have been speculating for a long time that the two shows share the same universe.

Psych and Monk are both well-established and popular shows that have revolutionized the detective genre and their scope of storytelling is only increasing with time.

Fans have noticed a subtle Monk reference in the Psych Season 8 finale, which makes their crossover even more possible.

In the final minutes of the Season 8 finale, Shaun and Gus are shown in their new home in San Francisco, where they discuss getting their old jobs back as consultants. When they discuss this with Chief Vick, Vick informs them that the position is already filled by their new consultant, who is currently ''alphabetizing the pantry."

Since Tony Shalhoub's Monk had obsessive-compulsive disorder in the show, many fans have since speculated that the show's finale was a subtle nod to its predecessor.

In an interview with E! Online, Franks even confirmed this and admitted that the shows are set in the same universe:

''Oh, yes [to the Season 8 reference]. The funny thing is, we owe such a debt of gratitude to Andy Breckman, who created Monk, and Monk as a show for sort of being the sort of comfortable hammock that sort of launched us.''

He added:

''So for us to send our show off into the ether where eight years is the same amount of years that Monk was on, it felt like a nice way to say that somewhere, these two worlds collided.''

Psych 4 seems like a good opportunity for a crossover with Monk

Franks' confirmation feels like there is a high chance that the shows could feature a possible crossover, and Psych 4 seems like a good opportunity.

Following the success of the third movie, Psych 4 was announced immediately, with James Roday Rodriguez confirming that the script is complete and the crew will begin filming in 2022. However, due to the Hollywood Strike and the cast going their separate ways for other projects, the shooting for the film was postponed.

Rodriguez confirmed while speaking to TV Line:

“The only reason that Psych 4 didn’t happen last year was scheduling...So, now we just kind of have to regroup, wait for Peacock to decide that they want to pay for it again, and hopefully we’ll be good.”

With the show's success, it is only a matter of time before Peacock gives the go-ahead for the fourth movie, and fans may get to see a possible crossover with Monk in the upcoming film.
