A Hundred Memories Episode 1 recap: Go Young-rye meets Seo Jung-hee, and Jae-pil saves Young-rye
The episode opens with a quick overview of Go Young-rye's life. Even though she's determined and hardworking, she struggles between her work as a bus hostess and her dreams of getting into university. One day, when she's helping the passengers to board, the bus gets overcrowded and proceeds to leave without her. A young woman waves a scarf to draw the driver's attention, and it works. When she boards the bus, a fellow passenger blames her for her irresponsibility and tells her that the driver wouldn't have stopped if the woman in the last row of the bus hadn't thrown her scarf. When Young-rye sees the woman, she almost gets mesmerized by her beauty. Young-rye offers to pay for her ride, but she refuses and instead gives a tip to help with motion sickness. It turns out the woman is Seo Jong-hee, a newly hired bus attendant with no previous experience.
In the next scene, we meet Han Jae-pil, an aspiring boxer. However, he has struggles of his own. His father seems unsupportive of his boxing career and taunts him for his low scores. In the latter part of the episode, when Jae-pil wins a boxing match, and his father finds out, he hits him with a billiard stick. Jae-pil's father's toxic behaviour doesn't fade his passion for boxing.
Back in the boarding, Young-rye spends time with her roommates when one of them gets agitated due to their chatter. Turns out the roommate is a bully. When Seo Jong-hee enters the room, the bullies gang up on her and threaten her. At night, Seo Jong-hee catches Young-rye reading an English-language book. Seo Jong-hee reveals they are the same age. The next morning, the bullies plan to teach Jong-hee a lesson, while the management pairs Young-rye with Jong-hee (as a trainee).
As she explains to him how the ticket system works, a student tries to escape without paying the fare. Young-rye rushes to catch the student through the narrow alleys. When the student is about to hit her with a piece of wood, Jae-pil saves her and tends to her wounds. It's a sweet moment, and it seems clear that Young-rye has fallen for him.
A Hundred Memories Episode 1 recap: The seniors bully Jong-hee, but Young-rye saves her
In the dorm, the seniors bully Jong-hee and ask her to buy food for them. Young-rye accompanies Jong-hee. On their way back to the dorm after buying the food, Young-rye visits her family. Her interactions with her mother reveal that she is only seen as a financial supporter of the family, and nobody seems to care about her dreams.
The next day, everyone wakes up with an upset stomach, and naturally, everyone blames Jong-hee, who brought dinner for them. The bully roommate reports it to the authorities, and they start pulling each other's hair. The bully accuses Jong-hee of missing laxatives in their food.
Meanwhile, Young-rye discovers that it was another bus attendant, Sook-ja, who added the medicines to the food. Even though Sook-ja defends herself, claiming it's cold medicine, Young-rye proves it by taking the medicine herself. She was constantly picked on by Mr. Na, and thus, she wanted to make others sick for a day so she could earn some extra money. That evening, Jong-hee warns the bully roommate to stop disturbing the juniors. In the end, both Jong-hee and Young-rye share stories about their lives over a bowl of ramen.
A Hundred Memories Episode 1 teases an upcoming love triangle between Jong-hee, Young-rye, and Jae-pil
