George R.R. Martin's fantasy world is set to expand with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, due to arrive early in 2026. Arriving on January 18, this is the second major prequel spin-off from Game of Thrones, set a century before the events of GOT. Apart from the fact that the upcoming release is set a century before, the show is also set to be very different from GOT.

In a recent appearance at the New York Comic Con, the cast and creatives behind the show talked about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and the terms they use to describe the fantasy drama made it apparent that it stands completely different than its predecessors.

Despite being a prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to be very different from Game of Thrones

The HBO blockbuster fantasy drama Game of Thrones was based on George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to be based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas also written by Martin. But, that is where the similarities between the two shows start to dwindle. While the upcoming drama is set in the same world as Game of Thrones, just 100 years before the events, it appears to be very different.

Where Game of Thrones was a dark drama with the stakes sky-high and no character, not even the protagonists, safe from beheadings or worse, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms appears to be a fun and refreshing departure. In a recent Comic Con appearance, the cast and creatives were asked to offer some spoiler-free descriptions about the show. Dexter Sol Ansell, who leads as Egg, replied:

"I would do hilarious. I would do heartbreaking. And gory."

Peter Claffey, who plays Dunk, added:

"I would go, Dunk’s arc would be, forcefully acquired wisdom"

To wrap it up, showrunner Ira Parker used adjectives that have seldom been used in the context of Game of Thrones:

"Short. Fun. Earthy"

While Game of Thrones had its fair share of jokes hidden within some very dark and dour narratives, adjectives like "hilarious", "short", "fun", and "earthy" wouldn't be used to describe it.

And that is exactly where A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms stands apart from its predecessors, Game of Thrones as well as House of the Dragon, because it is set to offer a much smaller, intimate, and character-centric look at Westeros through the stories of Tall and Dunk. It will be offering the point of view of the common folk, which has never been heard before in the context of Westeros.

There is no big musical number or title sequence that precedes it, just a simple title card introducing the show. Parker explained in a different conversation with Entertainment Weekly:

"This is the ground and the grass that has seen dragons and dragon fire before. So everything is just like how the world is, but a little stranger, a little different."

This is certainly a refreshing and interesting departure in George R.R. Martin's fantasy world.

A Knight of Seven Kingdoms premieres on HBO on January 18, 2026, with scheduled weekly episode premieres.
