The highly anticipated HBO fantasy drama series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg novels. These were written by George R. R. Martin and the plot of the series takes place 90 years before Game of Thrones. It centers on a humble hedge knight named Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and his young squire, Aegon Targaryen (Egg) who would eventually ascend to the throne.

The program features Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell. It was developed by Ira Parker and Martin. The first season consists of six episodes. It will premiere on January 18, 2026. Set in the world of Game of Thrones, the series explores issues like respect, loyalty, and growing power.

A sleeker two-legged dragon with enlarged wings and flames around its body is the new Targaryen symbol in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms trailer. While staying true to Westeros' rich visual and narrative heritage, this revised design sets the program distinct from earlier seasons. It also reflects its more realistic tone and historical setting.

More about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and new Targaryen sigil

A stunning new version of the House Targaryen insignia can be seen in the teaser for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms and this gives fans a fresh visual perspective on one of Westeros' most iconic emblems and the core components of the Targaryen banner. It is the red three-headed dragon on a black background, which has not been altered. However, this updated design includes a few small changes. Those work well with the show's unique tone and historical setting.

Most noticeably, the dragon on the flag has two legs instead of four and this is a detail that represents the initial purpose of the sigil's construction. This design option brings the symbol closer to a more authentic picture of dragons as imagined in legend. The dragon's wings are stretched rearward, resulting in a leaner, more menacing shape.

One of the heads is shown as breathing fire, with flames circling around the central figure of the sigil in a circular manner. This additional change gives the flag a more vibrant and creative aspect, indicating the arrival of a new generation of Targaryens.

The showrunner speaking to Entertainment Weekly said about the new sigil:

"We know that Westeros probably looked the same 10,000 years ago as it does today. If we were to do a modern 2025 Westeros show, it'd still be knights and armor and all this sort of thing. So it doesn't seem to be a lot of progress. But I do think that there are artistic progresses, or at least cycles, that there is a new designer of House Targaryen doing just a little bit of a different freehand version of something. That's really all it is. It wasn't meant to be anything different other than this is the sigil of this specific time. Everything should feel very bespoke to our show."

The design of the symbol in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms serves to ground the narrative in this particular era of Westeros, when the Targaryens continue to rule despite the extinction of the dragons that formerly signified their domination.

The series' broader creative approach is reflected in the graphic redesign. This adaptation has its own feel and style while maintaining the legacy of earlier series.

Part of that effort is the redesigned Targaryen emblem, which blends history with the visual approach of a more personal and realistic narrative. All things considered, the new Targaryen banner is more than a simple aesthetic makeover; it embodies the era, tone, and artistic identity of the series. It's a little but important detail that allows A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms to remain true to its origins while standing out in the growing Westeros fictional world.
