The new GOT prequel, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is set to premiere on January 18, 2026. The show is adapted from George R.R. Martin's novellas named Tales of Dunk and Egg.While it's set in the same GOT universe and takes place in Westeros, the upcoming fantasy series is set to introduce a lighter tone than the previous shows and will also be more character-driven than House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones. Along with that, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has also rectified a crucial mistake that both GOT and House of the Dragon made. In both the previous shows, the Targaryen sigil was not accurately presented as in GRRM's books. In the Song of Ice and Fire franchise, GRRM had specifically mentioned his dragons to be two-legged, while House of the Dragon and the later GOT seasons showed a four-legged and three-headed dragon in the Targaryen banner. As per the images of the Targaryen banner in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the sigil is back to a two-legged dragon, just like in GRRM's lore; therefore, fixing a long-time problem.More on this in our story.A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms rectifies the Targaryen sigil error View this post on Instagram Instagram PostIn Game of Thrones, when Daenerys returns to Dragonstone, she chooses the Targaryen sigil with a four-legged and three-headed dragon, and from Season 5 onwards, the HBO series featured the same sigil until the end. Later, in House of the Dragon, the same sigil was used, which was also noticed by Martin himself, as he later wrote about it in the blog, Not A Blog. He wrote:"Why would any Westerosi ever put four legs on a dragon, when they could look at the real thing and count their limbs?"The issue got even bigger as Martin also stated that the sigil also went on to become the cover of his books and wrote:"Those damned extra legs have even wormed their way onto the covers of my books, over my strenuous objections."Martin stated in his blog that he was inspired by Tolkien's work and also took reference from other cultures where dragons are mentioned in the lore and also mentioned how he 'carefully created' his magical creatures as he wrote:"I wanted my dragons to be as real and believable as such a creature could ever be. I designed my dragons with a lot of care. They fly and breathe fire, yes, those traits seemed essential to me. They have two legs (not four, never four) and two wings."Therefore, by using the correct Targaryen sigil with a two-legged dragon, the upcoming HBO series aligns itself with Martin's books, the original source of the stories, and fixes the mistake that the previous shows made.A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms stars Peter Claffey as the Hedge Knight, also known as Dunk, and Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon, a.k.a. Egg.
