A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows the journey of Ser Duncan the Tall, aka Dunk, and his squire, the Egg.

Dunk is the hedge Knight, while Egg is secretly Aegon Targaryen, who later becomes the king of Westeros. The Knight meets Egg in a tournament and tags along with each other to journey around the seven kingdoms, exploring politics, culture, and encountering some major noble houses like Targaryen, Baratheon, and others.

The show is a prequel to Game of Thrones and is set around 209 AC, around 90 years before the events of the original show. According to the writer of the show, Martin, the upcoming prequel will be much shorter and will have a unique tone from the original series. It will focus on the travels of Dunk and Egg while exploring Westeros before the birth of the dragons.

Let's explore the entire timeline of the GOT prequel, ahead of the release of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

House of the Dragon (101 AC - 130 AC)

House of the Dragon is where the story starts, about 100 years before Dunk and Egg's journey, and around 200 years before the events of GOT.

The focus of the show was on the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of Dragons. This was fought between Rhaenyra and Aegon II over the Iron Throne. During this period, the dragons played a central role in the region's politics. They are abundant and powerful while eventually, Westeros stabilizes under Aegon III's rule.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms (209 AC – 212 AC)

As mentioned, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms explores Westeros through the journey of Dunk and Egg. In season 1, Dunk is shown entering the Ashford Meadow tournament, where he meets Egg. Both of them journey to witness some political intrigue within the seven kingdoms. The show portrays the time around 209 AC and 4 years ahead in the timeline to paint a picture of Westeros years before what we see in GOT. The show is supposed to attach motives and layers to some characters and their journeys in Game of Thrones.

A Knight of Seven Kingdoms is an adaptation of George R.R Martin's favourite Dunk and Egg novels. These books include: The Hedge on which the show's season 1 is based, The Sworn Sword, which shares events with season 2, and The Mystery Knight, mirroring season 3's events.

Game of Thrones (298 AC – 300+ AC)

The original series was Game of Thrones, focusing on the Iron Throne during the rule of Robert Baratheon. This showed the return of the dragons, the old rulers of Westeros, and Robert's revolt against them, along with the white walkers and the knight king's threatening all of Westeros.

Game of Thrones was released in 2011 and gained popularity, making HBO release a prequel, House of the Dragon, in 2022, while the upcoming spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is scheduled to be released in 2026.

Both the prequels set up the foundations and deepen the political conflicts we see in the original series. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms portrays the story before the birth of dragons and is crucial to understand how the politics and power dynamics between the noble houses evolved before the battle and rivalry. The Egg and Dunk journey explores Westeros and the rebellion of Robert Baratheon, who then becomes the king in GOT.
