A Man On The Inside has been quietly becoming the new favorite show for fans everywhere as the second season continues to get praise from the audience and fans. While Ted Danson's Charles stands out as the perfect lead, his chemistry with the other characters is also a huge part of the show. Particularly his sizzling romance with Mona Margadoff, who is being played by Mary Steenburgen. If you love them on screen, you would love them off-screen too because the couple has been married for the last three decades.
This is the latest trend that's taking up a lot of shows and their cast. Casting real life partners on screen brings out real chemistry between actors who are playing love interests. Other examples include Nobody Wants This, and Matlock all brought in real-life partners of their stars, and the results have been surprisingly charming. Over on Nobody Wants This, Leighton Meester’s appearance as “Abby Loves Smoothies” in season 2 stirred up a whole wave of excitement, partly because she’s married to Adam Brody. Meester’s Abby shows up as an old friend of Joanne’s. She’s married, she’s hiring Noah to lead a baby-naming ceremony for her son.
The surprise cameo came from Melanie Lynskey in CBS’s Matlock reboot. Lynskey, who’s currently a powerhouse on Yellowjackets and The Last Of Us, appeared in season 2 episode 4 as Debra Palmer. She didn’t share scenes with her husband, Jason Ritter, who stars in the show, but her moments with Kathy Bates’s Madeline Matlock are buzzing with playful energy.
Still, season 2 of A Man On The Inside takes this whole spouse-casting trend and levels it up. Steenburgen isn’t treated like a novelty guest. Mona is woven into the story with intention, depth, and purpose. The writers skip any drawn-out romantic teasing and simply let Charles and Mona start dating. It’s refreshing and honestly respectful, acknowledging the real-life relationship without turning it into a gimmick.
More details about A Man On The Inside
A Man On The Inside grew out of Michael Schur’s imagination, but its heart comes from Maite Alberdi’s 2020 documentary The Mole Agent. The series follows Ted Danson as Charles, a retired engineering professor who decides that slowing down is overrated. Instead, he signs on as an investigative assistant for a private detective and heads undercover at Pacific View Retirement Community in San Francisco to hunt for a missing ruby necklace. The whole thing plays like a warm comedy with a quietly emotional core, which is probably why it landed on Netflix with so much confidence.
With the romantic arc of Danson and Steenburgen making an appearance in A Man On The Inside Season 2, it's no one of the best things about the show. Michael Schur praised the couple in a chat with Tudum, where he said,
“They are so in love with each other, they respect and admire each other so much. Frankly, it's very annoying. They set an impossible standard. I did not enjoy working with them for that reason, and I don’t intend to do it again.”
The show is currently on it's second run with well received appreciation, and is already brewing up a third season. A Man On The Inside Season 1 and 2 are available to stream on Netflix.
