Suits is one of the most popular legal dramas that still has a cult following among fans, due to which it also got a spinoff series called Suits LA. Although the spinoff was cancelled just after one season, fans are still hopeful of a season 10 of the original series.
However, another season of Suits is highly unlikely to happen due to the unavailability of an important character, Rachel Zane, played by Meghan Markle, as she has now retired from the field of acting. Therefore, a series with 10 episodes or more would be difficult to produce with a significant character missing.
While a series might not work without Markle’s Rachel, a Suits movie still remains a viable option for the franchise to expand more.
More on this in our story.
Why is a Suits movie a better option than a series after Meghan Markle's exit? Reasons explored
Meghan Markle’s character, Rachel, was one of the main characters of Suits, and her relationship with Patrick J. Adams’s Mike Ross was one of the best and endearing parts of the series. In season 7 of Suits, the duo married and moved to Seattle, with both characters departing from the series.
However, Adams reprised his role in season 9, when he came back to New York for a case and defeated Samantha and Harvey. But Markle’s Rachel did not appear with him, due to her marrying the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, and taking a step back from acting.
At the end of season 9, it was shown that Gabriel Macht’s Harvey Specter and Donna (Sarah Rafferty), now married, were also moving to Seattle to work with their friends, bringing them all together.
With Rachel not returning, the narrative will now be difficult to follow up on in a new season. Further, it will also be difficult to depict a divorce, as the storyline will be more significant to Mike and Rachel’s lives, and cannot be done without addressing it in depth.
Additionally, the option of suggesting a different reason for Rachel’s disappearance might not work effectively in a longer format like a series, making a Suits movie the only way to move forward and expand the legal drama further, as suggested by ScreenRant.
With a movie, Rachel’s disappearance can be given any reason, which does not have to be a major issue that needs to be addressed on screen. Just like how it was maintained in season 9 with Mike’s cameo, where Rachel was not present, a film where Harvey and Mike appear together for a brand new case does not have to include Rachel, and can still be a hit.
Suits creator Aaron Korsh talks about Meghan Markle’s return as Rachel
While a season 10 of Suits might not be possible without Meghan Markle’s character Rachel, creator Aaron Korsh has not given up on her return and is ready to bring Rachel into the Suits universe, whether in a spinoff or a new season of the original series, if Markle ever wants to reprise the role.
In an interview with People in February 2025, Korsh shared:
"So, look, to me, we have thought about whether it be Meghan or any of the other cast members coming on and playing themselves as an actor. I think for me that's a little ... My brain blows up at the thought of that."
He continued:
"So I think it blows up the world too much. Obviously, if Meghan wants to come back under any circumstances, Meghan can come back."
