The Doctor Who franchise is still an active one after the BBC ended its partnership with Disney after two seasons and a 2026 Christmas special, but it is yet to be known when or who the next Doctor is. Besides, there isn't much information regarding when the next season of the flagship show will be coming.

Even with well-loved actors returning and Russell T. Davies back as showrunner, reactions to the last few seasons have been mixed. With this uncertainty, many viewers have looked back fondly at older eras, especially the one led by David Tennant. Now, a new spin-off is coming soon, and there is also a chance Tennant might return in a story written by Mark Gatiss.

A new Doctor Who story

Writer and Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss recently spoke in an interview with Radio Times about a script that he had written, which was discussed thoroughly but never made, titled The Suicide Exhibition. He explained that the episode came close to being made many years ago. Gatiss said it was

“on the verge of production for a while in the late 2000s,”

but it never made it to filming. He also revealed that Big Finish, known for its Doctor Who audio dramas, had shown interest in adapting it.

Gatiss shared,

“I do [still have a copy],”

He continued,

“Big Finish has expressed an interest. It’s all gone very quiet, though. I'm waiting for that emergency phone call!”

What Gatiss said indicates that David Tennant could return if Big Finish decides to move forward. Gatiss gave a small teaser about the episode’s tone and setting. He said,

“It’s called The Suicide Exhibition, set in the British Museum, it's a sort of Indiana Jones-type story. It's rather good, I think.”

The idea of an adventure-style episode starring Tennant will likely draw attention, especially during a time when the show is looking for stability. While this possible Doctor Who project is still uncertain, a spin-off show has been confirmed. The main series is not expected back until Christmas 2026, but a new spin-off, The War Between the Land, will launch much sooner next month in the UK and in 2026 on Disney+. The series focuses on U.N.I.T. and brings a grounded approach to the Doctor Who universe.

The official synopsis describes the story as

“The five-part series follows Barclay (Russell Tovey), a low-level UNIT staff member whose ordinary life becomes a world of terror when an ancient species rises from the sea. Barclay becomes humanity’s ambassador when the mysterious Salt (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) emerges from the Tank at a summit on the Thames. UNIT, led by Kate Lethbridge-Stewart (Jemma Redgrave), fights for control as humanity faces destruction.”

The show stars Russell Tovey as Barclay, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Salt, Jemma Redgrave as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, Alexander Devrient as Colonel Christofer Ibrahim, Ruth Madeley as Shirley Ann Bingham, and Colin McFarlane as General Austin Pierce. Adrian Lukis, Patrick Baladi, Vincent Franklin, Francesca Corney, Mei Mac, Waleed Hammad, Iestyn Arwel, Hannah Donaldson, Manpreet Bachu, and Ann Akinjirin are also part of the cast, but their roles are yet to be revealed.

Until more news arrives about Gatiss’s potential story and a possible David Tennant comeback, this spin-off will be the next major addition to the Doctor Who universe and will be released in the UK on December 7, 2025, and on Disney+ in 2026.
