The Duffer Brothers have recently shared some incredible facts concerning Season 5 of Stranger Things. In a conversation with Variety, they shared a new mysterious place they discovered called The Abyss. The location is strongly linked to the show's storyline. In Tudum, the co-creator, Ross Duffer, said:

“We’ve slowly been peeling back the layers over the seasons, but in our final season, we wanted to explain finally what the Upside Down was.”

The creators actually planned this concept years ago. They kept it secret to surprise the audience later. Netflix originally asked them to explain the show's mythology during the first season. The brothers wrote a long document to outline these hidden details. They are now ready to share these answers with fans in the final episodes.

What do we know about the Upside Down?

Season 1 of Stranger Things introduces viewers to the Upside Down, a chilling mirror of Hawkins. This eerie world is filled with shadows, twisting vines that consume anything in their way, and terrifying creatures like the Demogorgon. Stranger particles float in the air, showing the place like a haunting atmosphere.

The Upside Down is not easy to reach. The main gate lies deep in the basement of Hawkins National Lab. Here, the government agents secretly plan to use the monster of this dark dimension as a dangerous weapon against their enemies.

Planning the mythology of Stranger Things

The Duffer Brothers did not want to explain everything immediately. They preferred to keep some mystery for the audience. However, Netflix executives asked for a clear explanation of the supernatural world early in production. Matt Duffer and his team spent time writing a detailed guide for the show. They told,

"We wrote a 20-page mythology document."

This guide outlined the rules of the Upside Down and other dimensions. It helped the writers understand their own story better.

Fun Ninja Turtles connection

In their notes, the writers initially referred to the Abyss by another name. The twenty-page document referred to it as Dimension X. It is directly based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. According to the writers,

"It wasn’t called the Abyss at that point; it was called Dimension X, which is a Ninja Turtle reference."

Such a reference to the 1980s pop culture is usually present in the producers of Stranger Things. It demonstrates how the authors got inspired by the cartoons of their childhood. The name eventually changed for the final show.

Revealing the big secrets

The team behind Stranger Things kept these plot points hidden for many years. They knew about the Abyss since the very first season. It was difficult to hold back such major information for so long. According to the producers,

"We’ve been holding those cards back for so long……to actually be able to show...hands here."

Matt Duffer was happy to be able to unveil the truth in Season 5 Volume 2. Now the fans can see the full picture that the writers planned from the start.
