Chelsea Houska DeBoer, a former Teen Mom star, has spoken out rather candidly about how she talks to her 15-year-old daughter, Aubree, about dating and pregnancy. The MTV star stresses the value of open communication with her teen after becoming a mother at the ripe young age of 18.

"We definitely have always had a very open relationship from the very beginning, so I think that's really helped," in a recent interview, the 33-year-old reality TV personality clarified.

Her parenting beliefs were inspired by her own experience as a young mother. She gave birth to Aubree at the age of eighteen with her then-boyfriend Adam Lind. Walker is four years old, Layne is six, and Watson is eight. She has been married to Cole DeBoer for eight years. According to the pair, Aubree is naturally discouraged from becoming a parent too soon by their younger children.

Instead of depending on one difficult exchange, Chelsea and her oldest daughter have developed continuous communication. This strategy reflects her stated desire to raise Aubree differently as well as the things she took away from her own adolescent parenting experience.

Beyond just discussing the pregnancy, the family's candour fosters trust and aids in navigating the challenges of raising a teenager in the contemporary environment.

Teen Mom’s Chelsea Houska opens up about giving her daughter “the talk”

DeBoer's communication strategy focuses on consistency rather than one-time discussions. She avoids the traditional awkward "birds and bees" talk in favor of ongoing dialogue.

"It wasn't this one initial sit-down conversation. It's just always been an open communication there," she explained.

This approach allows for natural discussions as situations arise rather than forced conversations.

The strategy appears effective. Teen Mom star Chelsea believes her open relationship with Aubree creates space for honest questions and concerns without judgment or embarrassment.

The couple's three younger children provide unexpected lessons for Aubree about the realities of parenthood. DeBoer jokes that witnessing daily chaos serves as excellent birth control.

"Luckily Aubree, I think, has been traumatized by her three younger siblings enough where that is the last thing she would want," Chelsea said with humor.

Cole agrees with this assessment.

"Just having her in the living room with the three little ones and in the chaos and the crying, that's enough. I just look at her and she gets it," he noted.

The natural exposure to parenting responsibilities gives Aubree firsthand experience of what caring for children actually involves, beyond romanticized notions.

As Aubree reaches driving age, Chelsea faces new parenting anxieties. The transition to greater independence brings different concerns than early pregnancy discussions.

DeBoer finds the idea of Aubree driving scary and admits she tends to be overly anxious, constantly reminding her daughter to stay safe and alert on the road. Cole shares her concerns but focuses more on the fact that other drivers can't be trusted, which makes letting go even harder:

"I just don't trust everyone else."

Still, both of them believe in Aubree's ability to make smart decisions and trust her overall judgment.

What does the future hold for Aubree?

Teen Mom personality Chelsea believes Aubree's hobbies and skills have creative potential. Her daughter's interest in photography and artistic endeavours suggests potential career paths.

"She's very creative, she loves anything artistic," Chelsea noted.

Elaborating:

"She's mentioned photography. Just anything artsy, I think would be her direction."

The family's design business through HGTV's Down Home Fab could provide opportunities if Aubree chooses that path. DeBoer remains supportive of whatever direction her daughter pursues.

Chelsea's approach reflects growth from her own teenage experience as documented on Teen Mom. Rather than lecturing about mistakes, she's created space for honest dialogue and natural learning.

Her strategy emphasizes prevention through education and open communication rather than fear-based warnings. The combination of ongoing conversation and real-world exposure through younger siblings provides comprehensive preparation for adult decisions.
