After over five years of its controversial conclusion, HBO's iconic fantasy drama adaptation Game of Thrones continues to be one of the most loved yet debated TV shows of all time. The David Benioff-D.B. Weiss classic retelling holds commendable RT scores (both in terms of critic as well as audience reviews) and is often spoken highly of owing to a well-structured plot led by a star-studded cast.
Back in 2012, a year after the show premiered, one of the cast members (portraying a fan-favorite character), Liam Cunningham, had opened up about why he considered the HBO classic to be more than just a "fantasy show".
To quote his exact words:
"It's a fantasy backdrop - a very expensive backdrop - but essentially it's a show about people in an extreme situation."
While on an interview with GQ Magazine, the BAFTA-winning star (in the same context) had also defended his earlier statement, he compared his Game of Thrones character to an iconic The Godfather role, saying that they are similar in ways.

Liam Cunningham considered his Game of Thrones role to have subtle similarities with The Godfather character
Despite being a fantasy drama, Game of Thrones is the perfect "Middle-earth" portrayal of politics and its dark side. As Liam Cunningham had mentioned in the interview with GQ Magazine in April 2012, it is a story of love and betrayal, and how complex family dynamics can lead to the downfall of an empire.
Fantasy, as per Cunningham, is definitely a major theme of Game of Thrones, but the main plot does not center on it. Defending his character's comparison to Robert Duvall's in The Godfather (Tom Hagen, a consigliere and lawyer of the Corleones), the award-winning actor had told GQ Magazine that it was "not a bad analogy." He said:
"The consigliere! That's not a bad analogy in that the show is a bit like The Sopranos - or The Godfather - meets Middle-Earth, in a sense. "
Cunningham further added, saying that Game of Thrones should not be described as a "fantasy show", and as per Cunningham's statement, it should be "the last thing" to call the HBO series. The show, according to him, definitely has "a fantasy backdrop", but it also revolves around a lot of other things. As he had said:
"It's about betrayal, jealousy, hatred, love, family, legacy."
Liam Cunningham played the part of Davos Seaworth, aka the Onion Knight, whose contribution as an advisor to Stannis Baratheon has been pivotal to the show's plot. Stannis was one of the claimants to the highly debated and infamous Iron Throne of Westeros, and Davos remained by his side till his death, proving unquestionable loyalty.
His arc is one of the most evolved ones in Game of Thrones, as he later dedicates all his time and effort to serving at Castle Black. Davos also takes part in bringing Jon Snow (played by Kit Harrington) back to life alongside Melisandre (portrayed by Carice van Houten) after an internal rebellion leads to the Lord Commander's death.
