Stranger Things is no stranger to pulling at heartstrings, but a specific moment in the upcoming season 5 has fans feeling especially anxious.

A single shot from the newly released trailer brings back one of season 4's most heartbreaking scenes — and it centers around Max.

Could this small visual hint be the show's way of revisiting the moment that nearly took her life? All signs point to yes, and the implications for her future are heavy.

A boombox by her side: Will Kate Bush be saving Max's life?

Stranger Things season 5 has teased several emotional returns, but none as quietly powerful as a shot of Max lying in a hospital bed, surrounded by silence — except for a small, familiar boombox resting beside her.

It's a detail that might slip past on first glance, but to fans who remember her desperate fight for survival in season 4, it carries deep weight. This isn't just background noise. It's a callback loaded with meaning.

Back in season 4, Max was haunted by Vecna, who targeted her grief and pain as a way to control her. His hold tightened until her friends stepped in, placing headphones over her ears and playing her favorite track — Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush - which gave her the strength to break free.

That sequence, scored by the now-iconic song, became one of the show's most emotionally charged moments.

Now, in the teaser for Stranger Things Season 5, we see Lucas sitting beside Max at the hospital where we last saw them in Season 4. The boombox suggests he's still playing Running Up That Hill, hoping it can bring her back once again.

This small, scene somewhere echoes both hope and heartbreak, revealing that even after all this time, Max remains in a coma. The scene shows how it's not just nostalgia — it's a sign that the fight for her isn't over, and neither is her story.

Stranger Things have happened in Hawkins and one and half year later, Lucas hasn’t stopped trying to save Max

What Stranger Things does so well is link emotion to action. And in Lucas' case, his actions speak volumes. According to the timeline, the events of season 5 begin over a year after Max was hospitalized.

Yet here he is, sitting beside her, perhaps daily, pressing play on that same song they once trusted with her life. The trailer may not say it out loud, but the message is clear: Lucas has never given up.

Even when every medical sign points to uncertainty, he clings to the only method that once worked. It's an emotional callback, but it's also a sign that Vecna's grip may still linger. After all, Max didn't just fall into a coma — she was nearly destroyed by the Upside Down's darkest force.

Her survival came at the cost of broken bones, a stolen future, and now, an uncertain existence.

"It's the biggest it's ever been in terms of scale..."

Matt Duffer told The Guardian, hinting at how Season 5 of Stranger Things aims to bring everything full circle. That includes unearthing the mythology of the Upside Down — and possibly explaining how Max's connection to Vecna might be the key to either waking her or losing her for good.

If music was once her tether back to reality, it may not be enough this time. The stakes are heavier, the emotionality is now sharper, and Max's fate more uncertain than ever.

Stranger Things season 5 doesn't need explosions to hit hard — sometimes, a silent room and a single song say it all.

That boombox isn't just a nod to the past; it's a signal that Max's story is far from over. The question is, will that callback be her salvation...or her goodbye?
