Abbott Elementary Season 5 returned on air after the mid-season break with episode 9, Mall, and it made a callback to one of the show's most hilarious jokes from Season 4. The episode started with the titular school having to operate from an abandoned mall instead of the actual school building due to the furnace of the building breaking down in episode 8, Birthday. While we saw the teachers struggling to keep the students in order in the latest episode of Abbott Elementary Season 5, there was also a joke in the beginning of the episode that reminded viewers of something we may have forgotten. It made a callback to a second job Gregory had taken back in Season 4, something that hadn't been mentioned until now in Abbott Elementary Season 5.Abbott Elementary Season 5 makes a callback to Gregory's other jobAbbott Elementary Season 5 episode 9, Mall begins with exactly that: the entire staff at an abandoned mall a few days before the school opened for the students. That meant none of them were happy to cut their holidays short to report to duty. Simon, a school district employee sent to look over the transition of the school's operations from the school building to the Mall, begins the episode by going through some messages from the district, when he mentions that the mall has no kitchen. That's treadin' on Gregory's other job, buddy."This joke, while a short-lasting one, is the first time Abbott Elementary Season 5 has mentioned Gregory's second job. Back in Season 4, episode 16, Books, we saw that since a teacher's salary wasn't covering his expenses, Gregory had to take two more jobs. One as a delivery driver and the other as a rideshare driver. The only other time this was mentioned was in Season 4 episode 17, Karaoke, when Gregory couldn't attend the karaoke night out with the rest of the staff on time because he was working as a rideshare driver. He had this inner conflict about whether he should take up more rides and make some more money or go attend the Karaoke and be with his girlfriend, Janine. Since it was a Friday, and thus more profitable for rideshare drivers, it was a difficult decision Gregory had to make. But he eventually decided to go to the karaoke night out just in time to sing the duet Always on Time with Janine.Abbott Elementary Season 5 episode 9 is the next and only time after Karaoke that the show has brought up Gregory's other job and the funny situations that it got him in back in the Karaoke episode. Soon, Janine and Gregory talked about how multiple jobs was draining Gregory, but Season 4 ended with us not knowing if he quit his other jobs or not. Abbott Elementary Season 5 episode 9 this also confirms that Gregory is still working all three jobs and somehow managing it all. The lunches the district promised to send for the students arrived in terrible condition, which caused yet another meltdown of the students, and the teachers finally admitted that the mall cannot be Abbott, but they have to try their best to make it work. All released episodes of Abbott Elementary Season 5 are streaming on Hulu. For more articles like this, follow Soapcentral.
