Tim Allen and Kat Dennings' multi-camera comedy has received good news ahead of its premiere. ABC has increased the Shifting Gears Season 2 episode count from 10 to 13. This means that fans will get to see three more weeks of Matt and Riley Parker's dysfunctional and chaotic father-daughter relationship play out on the small screen.

Shifting Gears Season 2, the comedy series created by Mike Scully, is set to premiere on ABC on October 1, 2025. It will become a staple for the network on Wednesday nights, along with an exciting comedy lineup.

The comedy series follows Matt Parker, a widower who runs an auto restoration shop. His life is suddenly changed when his estranged daughter and single mother, Riley, shows up at his place with her children. The comedy series explores themes of family, as Matt and Riley struggle to build their broken relationship.

More on this in our story.

Shifting Gears Season 2 gets three additional episodes

Good news for the ABC comedy fans, as Shifting Gears Season 2 will stick around for three more episodes on ABC, following its October 1 premiere. While the 13-episode order is still short of a full-season order (18 episodes), it suggests that the comedy is progressing in the right direction and the network is certainly interested in making it work. The comedy series, which premiered on January 8, 2025, ranked on ABC's top comedies for the season, and the network is keenly investing (and betting) on its sophomore season.

Season 2 will return on its usual Wednesday spot at 8 pm, alongside Quinta Brunson’s Emmy-winning single-cam workplace comedy Abbott Elementary at 8:30 pm. Since Abbott Elementary has received full-season orders since its debut, ABC will likely replace the 8 pm slot with the Scrubs reboot after the conclusion of the Tim Allen series.

Scrubs reboot, which will bring back original cast members Zach Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes, and John C. McGinley, is one of the most anticipated comedies for the network and will likely be paired with Brunson’s comedy juggernaut.

Tim Allen, a staple ABC star with veteran comedies like Home Improvement and Last Man Standing, continues to shine on the network as Matt Parker. His chemistry with Dennings, another sitcom favorite star (2 Broke Girls), was highly praised by his fans, and they cannot wait to see Riley and Matt on their screens again.

What is Shifting Gears Season 2 about?

Shifting Gears Season 2 will further explore the cheeky and chaotic Parker family drama, where Matt and Riley will continue to mend their ever-evolving relationship. A recent poster for the sophomore season donned the Season 2 tagline, which reads as follows:

“Family in mirror is closer than they appear.”

In addition to Allen and Dennings, returning cast members for Season 2 include Seann William Scott as Gabriel, Maxwell Simkins as Carter, Daryl Chill Mitchell as Stitch, and Barrett Margolis as Georgia.

Famous comedian and A Little Late with Lilly Singh star Lilly Singh will also join Shifting Gears Season 2 as a guest character. Singh will play the character of Jen, Riley's new friend and fellow mother. While the two women will instantly click, their friendship will be derailed following some 'mama-drama'.

Tune into Shifting Gears Season 2 on ABC from October 1, 2025.
