Absentia Season 2, released in 2019, brought back all the mystery, dark twists, and emotional moments that made fans love the first season, but this time, the story had gotten even bigger. Stana Katic took the centre stage as Emily Byrne, the FBI agent who went missing for six years and was declared dead. Ever since her return, Emily has been battling the demons from her past, trying to mend her relationship with her son, and getting sucked into another threatening criminal conundrum.

Emily’s journey remained the heart of the show. The tension throughout this season builds on her determination to get her life back, understand her memories, and prove who she is. But Emily did not stand alone. Old friends came back with private fights of their own, while strangers joined the fray, each with a secret.

Some characters join you as allies, some become your enemies and some keep you guessing their true intentions. Let’s take a look at the returning characters and the new entrants who added drama in Absentia Season 2.

Returning cast in Absentia Season 2

Absentia Season 2 doesn't change what fans liked about the show. The primary cast stayed the same, but the stories changed and developed. Stana Katic came back as Special Agent Emily Byrne, still struggling with the trauma of her long disappearance. She was on a mission to find out and piece together what happened to her.

Even though he can’t always agree with Stana’s character Emily, Patrick Heusinger was right there as Nick Durand, ex-husband and fellow agent of Emily. Their tumultuous past has in one way or the other affected their feelings towards one another on the personal front as well as their professional choices.

Many other familiar faces returned as well. Cara Theobold played Alice Durand, Nick’s new wife, and stepmom to Emily and Patrick’s son Flynn, played by Patrick McAuley, which added a lot of emotions as Emily tries to acclimate back into her past life. Neil Jackson was back as Jack Byrne bringing more depth to the Byrnes’ family drama.

Paul Freeman returned as Warren Byrne, Emily’s father, who tries to support her but often adds more to the stress. Angel Bonanni also returned as Detective Tommy Gibbs, who works with Emily on tough cases as always. The returning cast together formed the heart of the story of Absentia Season 2, a combination of redemption, betrayal, and healing, all wrapped inside a gripping crime-thriller.

New additions to Absentia Season 2

Absentia Season 2 introduced some interesting new personalities that shook things a lot. Mathew Le Nevez was one of the largest newcomers playing Cal Isaac, a rough ex-Navy SEAL. Cal was surprisingly in his overall outlook, gregarious to a degree, and thus an unlikely but highly interesting companion to the sombre and troubled Emily Byrne.

We also encounter Natasha Little as Special Agent Julianne Gunnarsen, an experienced FBI profiler who comes on board at the Boston office after a large-scale terrorist attack. She is cool, acute and highly professional which brings fresh vitality to the team.

The new characters do not appear out of nowhere on minor occasions, they are significant figures in the central plot of Absentia Season 2. Cal closely collaborates with Emily, who is tracking down a serial killer, and both are disciplined and kind in their relationship. Julianne, in her turn, assists the team to overcome the effects of a gas attack, managing difficult politics in the FBI.

The combination of familiar characters and new ones brought new tension, new relationships, and numerous thrilling plot developments, thus making Absentia Season 2 familiar and brand new at the same time.

Absentia Season 2 also featured some key supporting characters that influenced how Emily goes through things in a way she never thought. Patrick McAuley reappeared as Flynn Durand, son of Emily, who looks confused and alienated by her disappearance. Their love is gentle, uncomfortable and painful on many occasions, a constant reminder of what Emily struggled to conquer.

Ralph Ineson starred as Special Agent Adam Radford, a stern no-nonsense presence in the FBI. Bruno Bichir played a darker and more psychological role as Dr. Daniel Vega, and this brought a darker element to the mystery. Richard Brake also reappeared as Conrad Harlow whose past still haunted his present and kept the tension on.

The combination of these characters turned the world of Absentia into a bigger dimension, with new alliances, concealed threats, and difficult decisions. Their narratives made Absentia Season 2 seem larger, more heartfelt and full of unexpected twists.
