As mentioned, the episode starts with showing how, though Nick is making an effort to rejuvenate his relationship with Alice, she is continuing her affair with Jack. This overwhelms Nick, and he asks Flynn to spend the day hiking with him to gain some sense of normalcy. Eventually, Alice and Nick argue, and she accuses him of shutting her out since the miscarriage, while Nick highlights her infidelity. Nick then confesses his fears, and Alice accepts she can't have children. Nick ends up drinking heavily in the bar, broken and vulnerable.

Meanwhile, Emily and Agent Cal Isaac continue to investigate Tommy's death and a wider conspiracy. Emily reveals that Catalyst Diagnostics is linked to the victims and the suspicious flu vaccines Wolfe administered. This link suggests that Tommy's death isn't an accident. Moreover, the rest of the murders are not random but part of a controlled system.

Cal and Emily then research Catalyst's history. They discovered that Project Quill was a government-backed psychological experiment that started in the 1970s. The goal is to control PTSD in soldiers and trauma victims. The serum was meant to improve stress tolerance, but instead made subjects violent, aggressive, and sometimes homicidal. This mirrors what happens with many individuals tied to Emily's cases.

Dr. Ulf Maston led the Project Quill and continues to experiment on rats. He revealed the horrifying link that his colleague was Dr. Lu-Fang-Shen, the same psychologist who abused and condoned children at Barrett House, including Emily.

Eventually, they discovered that on Maston's wall was a picture of Dr. Semo Oduwale, who was Flynn's therapist. This connects him with Quill, who is also tied to Barret House. This suggests that he might be a part of the central conspiracy, which becomes the biggest reveal in Absentia.

In Absentia season 2 episode 8, Nick visits Emily's house, drunk and vulnerable. He tells her that he thinks Alice is cheating. Tommy died after knowing something crucial about Caralyst. The report mentioned Carbon monoxide poisoning as the reason. Emily believes that the scene was staged to make it look like a suicide. Her captain tells her that Tommy had also been suspended for breaking into Catalysts, which cements her doubt that something is off.

Jack confides in Emily, though he is seeing someone and is happy with her. Jack never reveals who he is seeing, but the viewers know that it is Alice, which creates some emotional and narrative tension. On the other hand, Crown tries to shut everything down with Wolfe dead. Cal and Emily insist that Wolfe was the one who did the act, but the planner is someone else. This sets the stakes at an all-time high in Absentia season 2 episode 8.
