Adolescence parents guide: Is the Netflix series suitable for kids?

The immense success of Adolescence right after its release definitely became an intriguing factor for the viewers to watch the series. However, many might want to know whether the series could be watched by their children.

If this question is rising in your minds about whether you should watch the series with your children or if your children should watch the series, then the answer is no. Adolescence is rated as TV-MA in the United States, along with similar ratings in other countries as well.

Why is Adolescence not suitable for children?

Besides the TV-MA rating, which directly indicates that this series is supposed to be watched by only adult viewers. Many might be eager to know why the series received such a rating if the story is based on the life of a thirteen-year-old boy. The very first reason that makes this series unsuitable for children is the extreme use of profanity.

Throughout the episodes, the characters use numerous usage of harsh language. It could create a negative impact on children. It cannot be denied that children are easily influenced. Hence, continuous exposure to such language would undoubtedly create an influence on the children. Along with the harsh language, Adolescence also depicts violence.

The storyline of Adolescence focuses on the murder of a young teenage girl by another teenage boy. This aspect of violence could be harmful for children. Similarly, cyberbullying and school violence are also prevalent aspects of the series.

Though both of these aspects should be discussed with children to create awareness, the depiction of these aspects in this series possesses the ability to have a psychological impact on children. Hence, parents should prevent their children from watching this series unless they are adults. There is also discussion about sexuality with multiple direct references throughout the series.

There is a graphic scene in Adolescence that shows Jamie Miller stabbing his classmate multiple times. Along with it, during the therapy sessions, while discussing murdering his classmate, Jamie refuses to admit his wrongdoing. Rather, he initially thinks that he did nothing wrong and his actions were the right course of action.

These actions of Jamie can also create a negative impact on children. It shows a refusal to take accountability. The series is not suitable for young viewers. Yet it cannot be denied that it is a crucial one that needs to be watched by adults. This is because it creates an awareness among the parents about the activities that could lead to similar situations with their children. Adolescence acts as a cautionary tale for the viewers.

The series spreads awareness about how ignorance from parents can lead children to take drastic missteps in their lives. Jamie desired the attention of his father, which he could not get. He also desired to be recognised amongst his classmates. However, in the end, things did not turn out well for Jamie. He took the wrong step. This eventually ruined his life completely.

2025 has been a great year for Adolescence. The series got multiple nominations at the Emmys this year. After the Emmys announced the winners, it was not a surprise that the series took home eight Emmy awards. With only four episodes, the series was able to win the hearts of millions. There is a realistic depiction of society that truly shows us how crucial the entertainment industry is for spreading awareness.
