Owen Cooper made waves across the entertainment industry earlier this year with his stellar performance as Jamie Miller in Netflix’s Adolescence. At a tender age, he was able to pull off the layered character of a teen accused of murder. What made the portrayal even more special was that all the episodes of the series were shot in a single and continuous take.

His performance earned him not only praise but also bagged him the award for Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Limited Series at the recently organized Gotham TV Awards 2025.

The 15-year-old actor attended the ceremony and accepted the award. In his acceptance speech, he dedicated his award to his Adolescence co-star Erin Doherty, who was also nominated in the same category. Erin was seen in the third episode of the series as forensic psychologist Briony Ariston.

Adolescence is a limited series that tells the story of Jamie, a 13-year-old schoolboy played by Owen Miller, who is charged with the murder of one of his female classmates. The show was co-created by Stephen Graham, who also starred in it as Jamie’s father, Eddie Miller. In episode 3, Jamie is visited in prison by psychologist Briony Ariston, played by Erin Doherty.

The 52-minute-long episode, which was also filmed in one continuous take, featured intense performances by both Owen and Erin as Briony tried to understand Jamie's psyche. Both actors eventually received nominations for Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Limited Series at the 2nd Gotham TV Awards.

The ceremony, which was held on June 2, 2025, announced Owen as the winner of the category, along with Jenny Slate of Dying for Sex. When the teen actor gave his acceptance speech, he dedicated his award to Erin, who equally deserved the honor. Owen said:

β€œMain person that I have to thank is Erin, who is also nominated for this award. That episode that we did together, it was easy to do it with you and it was such an honor to share this, share this award with you. You deserve this award just as much as I do, so round of applause for Erin please.”

The actor then went on to thank the show’s production team and cast, and said:

β€œAnd I also want to thank Philip Barantini, Joe Johnson, Stephen Graham and I want to thank Hannah Walters. I just want to thank everyone that was part of the Adolescence cast and crew, everyone that was there.”

He concluded by thanking his parents and the Gotham TV Awards for the honor. Adolescence marked Owen’s first major acting job, and the actor surprised everyone with his nuanced performance. He is also said to be the frontrunner for an Emmy nomination this year.

Adolescence premiered on Netflix in March 2025 and earned rave reviews for its cinematography, cast performances, and thematic relevance. The show also stars Ashley Walters as DI Luke Bascombe, Faye Marsay as DS Misha Frank, Christine Tremarco as Manda Miller, Mark Stanley as Paul Barlow, and AmΓ©lie Pease as Lisa Miller.

Adolescence is available to stream on Netflix.
