Dustin Dale Gaspard, 33 year old Cajun singer from Cow Island, Louisiana got the 1st four chair turn on The Voice Blind Auditions. His performance of “Bring It On Home to Me” prompted Niall Horan, Michael Bublé, Reba McEntire and Snoop Dogg all to express their respects. Gaspard ultimately decided to become Team Niall and Plantz believes Horan has already began that process.
Aside from his rare 4-chair turn, his audition was also special in that this was the first time there a bilingual Cajun French performance of The Voice as he sang in English and Cajun French. He had been praised by coaches for being one of a kind and just himself; Niall called him "proper unique, full of character voice.
It's an inspiring underdog tale of how he went from playing in tiny local venues and occasionally living out of his car to wowing a national television audience.
Niall’s mission — win Dustin’s trust on The Voice
Already renowned for investing in distinctive voices, Niall Horan made sure that his 4-chair win with Gaspard wasn't just a symbolic one. He went from exhilaration to active courtship as soon as the buttons clicked, offering Dustin praise, establishing a connection, and establishing himself as the ideal mentor for his musical career.
The audition that forced all four chairs
Dustin had an electrifying audition. His rendition of Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home to Me" blended English and Cajun French, and he began with a harmonica flourish before layering guitar and vocals. In the best manner possible, his swamp-pop-influenced, Louisiana-inspired approach took the coaches by surprise. The responses were quick.
"You're different, you're unusual, you're refreshing," Reba told him, and Michael Bublé shifted to French to show his appreciation.
Gaspard was framed as a daring new voice in the competition by American Songwriter Niall, who went further in his compliments, praising the "proper unique, full of character voice." Few voices require that type of unequivocal endorsement, and the four-chair turn itself conveys not only technical skill but an unmistakable feeling that all coaches felt.
How Niall intends to keep Dustin on his side
Niall quickly put this case forward for mentorship after Gaspard chose him. He highlighted how Dustin's bilingual ability and musical background fit with the style of artistry he appreciates: voice first, persona second. He mentioned his prior victories and said that a key component of his coaching style has always been dealing with voices that deviate from popular norms.
Speaking of brotherhood and common paths, Niall also used emotive language to inform Dustin that he sees something in him that aligns with his vision. The song selections, language mixes, and crossover tactics that take use of Dustin's bilingual appeal were probably already being planned behind the scenes by Horan's team. Making Gaspard stand out from the diverse pool of contestants on The Voice is his aim.
