While The Big Bang Theory has had multiple spin-offs, the original show ended in 2019. While we have seen Sheldon (played by Jim Parsons) and Amy Farah Fowler (played by Mayim Bialik) in Young Sheldon after the original show ended, we haven't seen or heard of Leonard Hofstadter. None of the spin-offs have explicitly mentioned him to be dead, but speculation was made that the character might not be alive because Sheldon and Amy spoke of Amy in Young Sheldon, but not of Leonard.

While we can't confirm whether Leonard, played by Johnny Galecki, will appear in the upcoming The Big Bang Theory spin-off, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, we can say that the character is most likely still alive. Besides, if the creators want it, Galecki might even appear in the upcoming spin-off.

The Big Bang Theory's Leonard Hofstadter might just make a return

The protagonist of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, Stuart Bloom, is the owner of the comic book store, which was frequented by Sheldon, Leonard, Raj, and Howard in The Big Bang Theory. He then became friends with the show's main characters, and we see him at various significant points of the show. Thus, we know that in the time after Sheldon and Amy won their Nobel Prize, Stuart was most likely still friends with the show's core friend group.

The logline of the upcoming spin-off begins with,

"Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon..."

Thus, we can tell that Leonard and Sheldon made a device after the show ended. While John Galecki hasn't been confirmed to be appearing in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, a machine that was partly made by Leonard, is going to be at the focal point of the show, and hints at the fact that he is most likely still alive.

The logline of the show continues,

"...Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise, geologist friend Bert, and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke. Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we’ve come to know and love from “The Big Bang Theory.” As the title implies, things don’t go well."

The logline doesn't specify the who from the original show will be appearing as the alternate versions of their The Big Bang Theory character, which is almost hopeful. It is almost hopeful because it means we might get to see the alternate version of almost any major character from the original show, which means even Leonard.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe stars Kevin Sussman as Stuart Bloom, Lauren Lapkus as Denise, Brian Posehn as Bert, and John Ross Bowie as Barry Kripke. The show is produced by Chuck Lorre Productions and Warner Bros. Television, and executive produced by Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady. The series is still in development, and a release date has yet to be revealed. Stay tuned for more updates.

The Big Bang Theory is streaming on HBO Max and Hulu.
