Alice in Borderland Season 3 is a headlong dive into new uncharted territory. This time, Arisu and Usagi come back not only as survivors but also as a married couple who have to bear the burden of all they went through in the deadly games. The new season presents the exotic Joker tournament, a high-stakes contest that puts both tact and heart to the test.

And just as we thought we knew what Alice in Borderland could toss our way, Netflix gears up and introduces us to a pack of fresh faces, new players who add depth, make it less predictable, and provide plenty of heart (or heartbreak) to the narrative.

Some of these new faces create an immediate impression on viewers. You keep them in mind the moment you see them, stealing the spotlight with their charm or mysterious aura. Then again, some feel like they missed opportunities: characters that had enormous potential but were not given enough time to shine or whose backgrounds leave their personalities aggravatingly ambiguous.

Here is a closer look at five new characters in Alice in Borderland Season 3 that either stole the show or missed it.

Ryuji in Alice in Borderland Season 3

Ryuji enters the scene with a cool, inquisitive, and ominously silent air: a university psychiatrist who is obsessed with the afterlife and whose presence catalyzes the whole plot of Alice in Borderland Season 3. He is portrayed with a slow, careful intensity by actor Kento Kaku, each glance seemingly filled with a dozen different things. You never know whether he is a friend or a threat or both.

The ambiguous ethics and lofty goals of Ryuji make him one of the best new characters of Season 3. His methods of testing Arisu and Usagi keep the Joker storyline emotional and tense. He would be the true centre of the season.

Rei in Alice in Borderland Season 3

Rei storms in with cyan blue hair and a sense of bravado and wildness that immediately draws one’s attention. She appears initially as nothing but pure chaos, clever, selfish, and continually pushing the boundaries. But Tina Tamashiro provides her with a certain human context that makes her actions strike even more. Rei injects great energy and a bit of much-needed humor into the deadly games, yet she also raises one of the big questions: what becomes of kindness in the face of survival as the only objective? She steals scenes by being unpredictable, alive, and irresistible.

Sachiko in Alice in Borderland Season 3

Sachiko is not strong in a flashy way, but she is strong in her persistence. She is a housewife with a rough background and adds a sense of reality to all the mayhem of the season. Hers is a tale of family, survival, and the shock of returning to the Borderland. Sachiko’s character, brought to life by Risa Sudou, is nervous at first but gradually becomes determined. Sachiko's journey provides some of the most touching and human moments in Alice in Borderland Season 3. She turns out to be a good ally to Arisu’s team, and her silent courage remains with you even after the episode is over.

Tetsu in Alice in Borderland Season 3

Another impressive character is Tetusu, a middle-aged, savage man who proves to be far more gifted in the games and more vulnerable than he appears. Koji Ohkura in Tetsu’s role makes him seem alive, with crass jokes and abrupt flares of courage and compassion. You might've observed that his character has a deeper redemption arc to be discovered, but it never comes to fruition. Nevertheless, Tetsu is enjoyable to watch, and you cannot help but hope for just one more scene to provide his story with a decent ending.

Nobu in Alice in Borderland Season 3

Nobu is the young soul at the center of the show: timid and nervous, yet secretly courageous when needed. His befriending Arisu is sweet and easy to cheer on. However, he does not get a lot of screen time, and when he does, his most successful moments are often in support of older characters rather than his own. Nobu, played by Kotaro Daigo, is a likeable character who steals scenes with his wholesomeness. We just hope the writers of Alice in Borderland Season 3 allowed him to be a little more prominent.

The new characters in Alice in Borderland Season 3 are both hits and misses: there are many good casts and good performances, yet some plot lines could have been better developed. Who, according to you, was the most memorable new character in Alice in Borderland Season 3?
