Ahead of the premiere of Alien: Earth on FX and Hulu, Timothy Olyphant, who plays Kirsh, and showrunner Noah Hawley, revealed some tidbits about the new synthetic and the mentor/trainer of Wendy, the show's protagonist.
During an online press panel, the actor and showrunner talked about how Kirsh stands apart from previous synthetics in the franchise. Hawley said (via The Direct),
"Kirsh "is [not only] programmed not to harm his boss in any way, but disagreeing with the boss is also discouraged. And getting angry at the boss is verboten."
He further noted,
"If [he doesn't] seem to see eye-to-eye with him, maybe [he'll] just give him a little smile and tell him, f*ck you with your eyes."
To which Olyphant added,
"It was always fun to play around with the idea that, I don't know, maybe he started to develop some thoughts of his own, and we'll see."
Not just his look, but his programming is also quite different. Olyphant jokingly added that he initially thought that bleaching his hair would make his character look different. He then appreciated the performance of Ian Holm, who portrayed Ash, and Henricksen's Bishop, and noted that it was their performances that inspired him to take up the role in Alien: Earth.
Who is Kirsh in Alien: Earth?
Kirsh is no ordinary Android. In Alien: Earth, he's a synthetic with programming that ensures that he always listens to his superior, yet clearly harbours thoughts of his own. He works for Boy Kavalier, the young CEO of Prodigy. Set in 2120, the story finds Kirsh mentoring Wendy, a hybrid Android.
On the surface, Kirsh is calm, wise, and gentle. But don't let that fool you. While he bonds emotionally with Wendy, a shadow lingers. Is he a protector or a predator? With emotions, power, and hidden programming at play, Kirsh may be the franchise's most layered synthetic yet.
Alien Earth: Release date, plot, and more
Alien: Earth will release on August 12, 2025, in the US (FX on Hulu and FX) and on August 13 in the U.K. (Disney+), kicking off the first-ever TV adaptation of the Alien franchise. Set in 2120, years before the events of the 1979 film Alien, the series blends corporate dystopia with chilling sci-fi.
The synopsis, as per Rotten Tomatoes, reads,
"When a mysterious space vessel crash-lands on Earth, Wendy and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers make a fateful discovery that puts them face-to-face with the planet's greatest threat."
In this series focus shifts to the Earth for the first time, introducing five power-hungry corporations: Prodigy, Weyland-Yutani, Lynch, Dynamic, and Threshold. When a research vessel crash-lands, a deadly race begins to claim the remaining specimens.
At the centre of the story is Wendy, a hybrid, portrayed by Sydney Chandler. She is instructed to investigate the crash zone with her team and explore the wreckage. Unsurprisingly, the mission goes sideways. The result? Complete chaos and terror.
