All Creatures Great and Small Season 6 Episode 1 begins on a chaotic note. It takes us to early May 1945. Skeldale House is a complete mess. With rats hovering around, Siegfried's clinic and home aren't what they used to be. The reason? Mrs. Hall has left to stay with her son Edward in Suderland.
Elsewhere, the Herriots family has grown, and they are living at the Aldersons' farm. Jimmy now accompanies his father to the farm visits, and Rosie (James and Helen's daughter) is almost a year and a half old. In short, it's a full house, and Helen and James barely get any time to spend together.
Tristan's back from the war, and it looks like Siegfried has forgotten to pick him up from the station. Yes, Siegfried has grown a habit of forgetting things, and it's a huge problem. James rants to Helen that their business is crumbling down. Tristan and James finally decide to bring back Mrs. Hall without informing Siegfried. They visit her in Suderland, and she agrees to come back when Tristan tells her about the house and Siegfried's condition.
When Mrs. Hall returns, James and others are eager to see her. But Siegfried isn't quite elated (at least he tries to act as one). He's stubborn, and when he argues with Mrs. Hall. He doesn't realise that he keeps pushing people away. When James confronts him, Siegfried reveals that Mrs. Hall's leaving Skeldale House has affected him, and that's what makes him so sour. When he realises his mistake, he rushes to the train station to stop Mrs.Hall from leaving. Amidst this, we learn that the war's over. Mrs. Hall is relieved to hear the war's over, and she tightly hugs Siegfried. In the end, they all enjoy fireworks at the town square. Meanwhile, Tristan is yet to share the happy news that he has been awarded a military cross.
