Stranger Things season 5 brought Jamie Campbell Bower's character to an end. Bower played the role of Vecna, the ultimate villain in the Netflix series.
However, it wasn't the only character that Bower played, as he was also 001 for Eleven, Henry Creel for the others, and Mr. Whatsit for the children in the series. In Stranger Things season 5, it's revealed that he wanted to create his own army by using small children and wanted to merge the Upside Down with the real world.
It's revealed that it was the Mind Flayer who took over him, but Henry tells Will that he is not controlled by the Mind Flayer and is independent. Vecna's story comes to an end in Stranger Things Season 5 when Eleven and her friends defeat him, with Joyce Byers delivering the final blow with an ax.
After the series's success, Jamie Campbell Bower appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Speaking of why his character had to die, he explains:
"The show is so much about friendship and love and hope and joy. And of course, the person who is not that has to go, you know. All he really needs is a hug, though."
The series focused on the friendship between Will, Mike, Lucas, and Dustin, with Eleven and Max joining the group later. Viewers also loved the friendship between Dustin and Steve Harrington and Lucas and Max, who were always there for each other.
Jamie Campbell Bower reflects on Vecna's final moments in Stranger Things Season 5
In the final moments, Vecna is seen gasping for air, after which Joyce Byers comes and beheads him with the ax. The scene was seen as powerful since it started with Joyce and her son fighting against the Mind Flayer and ended with her killing Vecna, bringing his story and their suffering to an end.
Talking about Vecna's ending, Jamie Campbell Bower said on The Tonight Show that getting his head chopped by Winona Ryder, who played the character of Joyce Byers, was incredible.
He revealed that he wanted to say the word 'please don't,' adding:
"Henry and Joyce within that have met each other. So when she kind of walks up to him, I felt like in that moment that the humanity could come through a little bit more, and we can just reintroduce that level of sort of potential; maybe he could be saved at that point."
However, in the episode, his plea fell flat, as Vecna growls at Joyce while she tells him that he had messed with the wrong family.
Speaking of the overall series's ending, Jamie Campbell Bower added that:
"It's the ending the show deserves. I mean, I have been a fan of the show since the start, so like, even just joining the show was a huge achievement, I suppose, and I felt very honored and blessed to be a part of it."
While Jamie Campbell Bower's character, Vecna, has a tense relationship with Eleven, who repeatedly defeated him, he revealed that the two actually share a strong bond.
In one of the popular Stranger Things season 5 behind-the-scenes finale clips, Millie Bobby Brown, who plays the role of Eleven, is seen attacking Vecna with her powers, and as she moves towards him, the two end up hugging each other, showing the true friendship they share with each other.
