Apple TV+ has always been picky and experimental with its TV shows and has released some of the most unique shows in recent years. From Ted Lasso and Severance to Silo, the network might have joined the streaming wars a bit late, but they are surely here to stay.
While Ted Lasso was miraculously resurrected for Season 4, Apple TV+ canceled six shows in May. While there are no confirmed reasons for this decision, financial crunch and declining viewership might be some of the factors.
Apple TV+ canceled six shows in May: Mythic Quest, Time Bandits, Sunny, Still Up, Schmigadoon!, and Acapulco.
More on Apple TV+'s canceled shows in May in our story.
Apple TV+ canceled three shows after their first season
While Apple TV+ is known for experimenting with new genres and concepts, some don't always land. That is why the network canceled a total of three shows right after their first season.
The most shocking cancellation was Katie Robbins' black comedy sci-fi show Sunny, which premiered on Apple TV+ in July 2024. Despite its unique take on the sci-fi & comedy genre and achieving an RT score of 90%, it was cancelled after Season 1.
Talking to The Hollywood Reporter, actress Rashida Jones (Suzie Sakamoto) said after Sunny's cancelation:
“I think [Sunny] is finding its audience because people seem to like it and a lot of people talk to me about it. What [Apple] do have is they have really good taste, and they do make really good shows.”
Another comedy series, Still Up, debuted on the network in 2023. The show starred Antonia Thomas and Craig Roberts in the titular roles and followed the story of two insomniac best friends who bond over sleepless nights.
Since Apple TV+ is very picky about comedies, Still Up did not manage to create its unique mark and was quietly shelved.
Lastly, Jemaine Clement, Iain Morris, and Taika Waititi created the fantasy series Time Bandits in 2023, which was also axed after Season 1. Based on Terry Gilliam’s 1981 cult classic film, the series followed a group of thieves who traveled across time and space searching for world riches.
While the show had a promising premise and talents like Lisa Kudrow, it was canceled after one season.
Which other shows were canceled by Apple TV+ in May?
While the network axed three new series, there were also some shocking cancellations of long-standing shows.
Fans were especially shocked when the network announced the cancellation of Mythic Quest. With an RT score of about 97%, it was one of the earliest original series on the platform that became very popular. Created by Charlie Day, Megan Ganz, and Rob McElhenney, the show followed a fictional video game company that developed the titular MMORPG.
Announcing the show's conclusion after four seasons, executive producers Megan Ganz, David Hornsby, and Rob McElhenney said:
“Endings are hard. But after four incredible seasons, ‘Mythic Quest’ is coming to a close.''
Another comedy series cancelled after four seasons is Austin Winsberg's Acapulco. Based on the Mexican-American comedy How to Be a Latin Lover, Acapulco currently has an RT score of 100%, but the show was still axed after Season 4. The final and fourth season will air in July 2025.
Lastly, the musical comedy series Schmigadoon! was also cancelled after two seasons. The show debuted on the network in July 2021 and continued with a sophomore season in 2023, but it won't return with a third season.
Co-creator Cinco Paul announced the news on his social media:
“I am sad to share that Apple will not be moving forward with Season 3 of Schmigadoon!”
The show was based on two New York doctors who go on a backpacking trip to mend their failing relationship.
