"Almost done shooting": Only Murders in the Building EP Dan Fogelman gives promising update about Season 5 filming

Season 4 of Hulu's Emmy-winning mystery dramedy series, Only Murders in the Building, starring Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, and Martin Short, concluded in October 2024. Ahead of the season finale, the series was renewed for Season 5 in September 2024. Even though production for Only Murders in the Building Season 5 began in March 2025, there's no update on promotional footage/images yet.

Ahead of the official release date reveal, Dan Fogelman dropped a pretty good hint that gives us an idea about the probable release window

In an interview with Collider at Newport Beach TV Fest, Dan Fogelman, the executive producer of Only Murders in the Building, gave a quick filming update about the upcoming season. He said,

"Well, I mean it’s great. I’ve seen six of the ten episodes already. We’re almost done shooting the season as we speak."

This filming update teases that Only Summers in the Building Season 5 might be released sooner than expected. Going by its usual release pattern, there's a good chance that the show will be back by late summer/early autumn. The production of Season 4 was completed by June, and it premiered on August 27, 2024, on Hulu.

Previously, in a conversation with The Wrap, Fogelman hinted that he's quite proud that the series has maintained its yearly release schedule. He told,

"We have two guys who aren’t 20-year-olds doing it — when we are back and hustling and get the scripts done in time, and we get back shooting … we have a consistent rhythm of getting back on TV for the people who watch it that I’m really proud of for the show. I’m excited to get going again.”

Filming began in March 2025, and the cast and the crew have been spotted across multiple New York City locations, including Staten Island and the Upper West Side's Belnord apartment building.

The core trio- Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez will return for the upcoming season alongside Meryl Streep, Jackie Hoffman, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and Michael Cyril Creighton. There's also an impressive list of newcomers and recurring faces, which includes Keegan-Michael Key, Christoph Waltz, Logan Lerman, Renee Zellweger, Bobby Cannavale, Jermaine Fowler, and Tea Leoni.

Season 5 will pick up after the death of the beloved doorman, Lester, and will delve into the mystery surrounding Nicky "The Neck" Caccimelio's disappearance. The series will blend mystery and humor while diving deep into New York's history. John Hoffman, showrunner and co-creator of OMITB, told The Wrap,

"Season 5 will hit on some very current things going on within New York, specifically very relevant things that are happening in the city right now, in ways that honestly we couldn’t have even predicted. The show has always been classic meets modern. So that is carried through again in a very, very big way within the next season."
