Amazon has greenlit a new TV adaptation of the Wolfenstein video game franchise after successfully bringing Fallout to the screen earlier. This new series adaptation will be produced by Kilter Films, the same firm that brought Fallout to TV, and producer Patrick Somerville.
The collaboration pairs producers with a history of video game-to-screen adaptations and consultation from the developers of the existing Wolfenstein games.
The show is said to take its cues from the main points of the games, including its setting in an alternate history and its storyline of fighting against the Nazis. The exact plot points are not revealed, but with key individuals from the original games on board, the show is likely to stick closely to what came before.
The Wolfenstein Series: Background
This game is among the longest-running video game franchises. The original game was released in 1981, and 1992's Wolfenstein 3D was instrumental in getting the first-person shooter genre into the mainstream. The series had a new following when developer MachineGames relaunched it in 2014 with The New Order.
The games take place in an alternate history where Nazi Germany has won World War II by developing superior technology. Gameplay tracks U.S. soldier William "B.J." Blazkowicz as he battles against the Nazi regime. The most recent main installment, Youngblood, was released in 2019.
Amazon's entry into video game adaptations
Following the success of the Fallout series, Amazon stepped up its expansion into video game-franchise-based content. The firm has made a significant investment in both games and TV series adaptations.
Amazon's MGM Studios is spearheading the Wolfenstein adaptation, among others, such as television shows based on other prominent game franchises. Amazon executives have indicated that they believe there is long-term value in transposing popular gaming properties to the small screen.
Who is involved in the new series?
This game adaptation series will be developed by some of the major individuals with adaptation and gaming experience. The creator, writer, and showrunner of the series will be Patrick Somerville (Netflix's Maniac and HBO's Station Eleven). The executive producers will be Kilter Films, the makers of Fallout.
Jerk Gustafsson of MachineGames, developers of the latest Wolfenstein games, will also be involved in the project, contributing knowledge from the developers. The addition of these figures is meant to contribute to the project's continued authenticity in the games.
Links between Wolfenstein and Fallout
Although the same production studio and certain creative direction are developing the two series, they are distinct. Fallout is set in a post-apocalyptic America forged through nuclear conflict, while Wolfenstein involves an alternate history of the 20th century in which Nazi Germany emerged victorious.
There is no story connection between the two series, from what has been stated by game developers and discourse among fans.
Amazon’s approach to Game Adaptations
Amazon has been cautious in approaching video game adaptations, relying on internal development and strategic partnerships. Amazon currently has several projects under development, including Tomb Raider, The Lord of the Rings, and others, in addition to this latest game adaptation.
Representatives for the company have stated that converting games into TV shows is an aspect of a larger strategy to make consistent, high-impact content releases. Amazon will continue to develop a consistent slate of projects as part of its entertainment efforts.
