Fans have been waiting for some updates on Amazon's epic historical Viking drama titled Bloodaxe since it was greenlit in March 2025. Now, after much anticipation, Amazon MGM announced a major casting update, with six new actors cast in major roles.
The historical drama chronicles the rise of history's most prominent Viking warriors, Erik Bloodaxe and his daunting wife, Gunnhild, Mother of Kings. The formidable couple are fighting to rule Norway, and their path to the throne is lined with rivals and friends whose loyalties seem to shift towards betrayal, tearing up the land in the process. Here's everything we know about the latest castings.
Major casting update for Amazon MGM's Viking Saga, Bloodaxe
The epic historical Viking saga has been created, written, and executive produced by Michael and Horatio Hirst. In a major update for the show, six new actors have also been cast. Five actors have been cast as series regulars, and the sixth as a recurring character. This is the first casting update since the central characters, Bloodaxe, his wife, and his brother Haakon, were revealed to be played by Xavier Molyneux, Jessica Madsen, and Levi Miller.
Karlis Arnolds Avots has been cast as Egil, a poet, sorcerer, murderer, farmer, somewhat psychopathic, and a ladies' man. He is a sworn enemy to Erik Bloodaxe, owing to the exiling of Avots' family by his father, King Harald Fairhair. Avots was previously seen in projects such as January, Lovable, and Soviet Jeans.
Next up, Rod Hallett, seen in projects such as The Shadow Window, The Tudors, The Last Kingdom, and Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles De Menezes. He has been cast as Athelstan, the King of Wessex, a formidable and clever warrior and king. Athelstan allied with King Fairhair and has since been grooming his young son Haakon as the nation's future leader. This alliance is a double-edged sword since it would also establish Athelstan's influence far beyond just Wessex.
The third casting is Alina Tomnikov, who plays two roles on Bloodaxe, as Greta and The Seer. Greta, a respected shield maiden, is one of Erik's trusted fighters. She also possesses a special ability to transform into "The Seer," who can make divine future declarations based on her all-seeing powers, which have been ordained onto her by the gods themselves.
Sisse Marie has also joined the cast as a major member and will play Thyra, Denmark's queen, Gorm's wife, and Gunnhild's mother. She is a formidable, steadfast, and cunning queen who fights tooth and nail to ensure her king's rule's longevity.

Finally, Rune Temte, as seen on Marvel’s Captain Marvel, Eddie the Eagle, and Time Bandits, will play Gorm, Thyra's husband and the king of Denmark. He's different from the brashness and hot-headedness that are considered staples of Norsemen and instead is a clever and devious king who calculates and diplomatically handles his rule.
Additionally, Jesper Christensen will join the cast as King Harald Fairhair, the first king of Norway, who relies on Bloodaxe's support and love, and is concerned that his other sons are plotting against him as he nears the end of his rule.
The official description for the show from Amazon MGM reads:
