Amazon Prime Video has officially launched a new original series, The Runarounds, from the creators of Outer Banks.

The series will premiere worldwide on September 1, 2025, with all eight episodes available to stream upon release.

Deadline reports that the show centers around a group of tight-knit young friends who just graduated from high school in Wilmington, North Carolina, and are brought together to create a rock band for the summer break. While The Runarounds is not a spinoff of Outer Banks, it does have the same creative team behind it, including Jonas Pate and Josh Pate, and also has some cast overlap.

The series stars real musicians in acting roles, with the cast being selected from the actual band of the same name that also starred in the third season of Outer Banks. Amazon Prime characterizes the series as a coming-of-age drama based on music, ambition, and the struggle of adulthood.

The creators and their legacy

The Runarounds is produced by Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke, who previously created the Netflix hit series Outer Banks. Outer Banks is a fan-favorite young adult drama set in North Carolina as well.

The creators of the show desired to produce a new series based on actual music and real teenagers' experiences, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Runarounds employs the same storytelling technique and production value that made Outer Banks a worldwide hit.

Premise and Plot

The premise of the show revolves around a diverse group of teenagers banding together to become a rock band during their high school graduation summer break. Variety and Deadline report that the group comes together based on a common goal of music and a vision of being stars.

Throughout the summer, the characters seek their musical dreams, have romantic relationships, and encounter challenges on the journey to adulthood. The band, as fictionalized in the novel, consists of actual musicians, and the story goes through both the peaks and troughs of chasing dreams on the cusp of adulthood.

The series will also include original music sung by the cast, such as songs like "Funny How the Universe Works" and "Senior Year," which can currently be streamed. The episodes are shot against the background of Wilmington, North Carolina, to keep the series rooted in a real-world environment that is representative of actual youth life.

The Runarounds: Cast and real band background

The leading cast consists of William Lipton, Axel Ellis, Jeremy Yun, Zendé Murdock, and Jesse Golliher, all part of the actual band The Runarounds. The supporting cast includes Lilah Pate (Jonas Pate's daughter), Kelley Pereira, Marley Aliah, Maximo Salas, Brooklyn Decker, Hayes MacArthur, and Shea Pritchard.

The band initially came into existence in 2021 as a result of a casting request for Outer Banks. They were chosen from over 5,000 candidates and performed as a band on season three of that series. The Hollywood Reporter says that the real band's journey motivated the show's storyline, rendering the series a mix of scripted drama and authentic musical experience.

Production and release

The Runarounds is co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios, and Skydance Television. Executive producers are creators Jonas Pate, Josh Pate, and Shannon Burke, with a teleplay by David Wilcox. Production started in August 2024, and the series promises to bring a new take on musical aspirations through youth culture and modern storytelling.
