Anyone who has been on the internet recently knows about the hate some characters from The Summer I Turned Pretty have been receiving since season three started. Several characters of the show, like Jeremiah, are getting hated on for their actions in season three.
While they are just characters in a show, fans feel passionately about their actions, and they are vocal about it. But the hate is not just limited to the characters, with netizens hating on the actors who play the characters as well. It is clear that they don't like how Jeremiah has cheated on Belly, then proposed to her with an inexpensive ring, and then made their entire wedding about what he wants.
As Variety reports, hate on Gavin Casalegno, who plays Jeremiah, has gone to an extreme limit, with the actor receiving death threats. This obviously isn't acceptable behavior, which made Amazon Prime issue a statement against fans bullying the actor. The statement was captioned as,
“The show isn’t real but the people playing the characters are"
Amazon's statement about the hate on the cast of The Summer I Turned Pretty
It is no secret that Jeremiah Fisher isn't exactly a well-liked character. The Summer I Turned Pretty fans have always segregated themselves into two groups: one that roots for the older brother Conrad Fisher and one that roots for the younger brother Jeremiah Fisher. In the first two seasons, the hate on Jeremiah was minimal, as the character hadn't done anything too jarring.
But in season three, after he cheated on Belly twice, fans started hating the character heavily online. Some people who were Team Jeremiah shifted loyalties to Team Conrad because they did not want to support a cheater.
While it is completely fine to be passionate in your love or dislike for a character, one must remember where to draw the line. Moreover, one must remember that the actor and character aren't the same. An actor shouldn't be getting hated for the character they play.

But some The Summer I Turned Pretty fans did not understand that, and their hatred of characters has led to their hatred of the actors as well. That hate reached such a level that it made Amazon Prime issue a statement speaking against it before episode eight, Lass Kiss, aired.
The streaming platform posted a video on TikTok and Instagram, which stated,
“The Summer We Started Acting Normal Online.”
Hopefully, now that the platform has released a statement, fans will tone down their hatred for the actors, no matter how much they still dislike the characters. This isn't the first time the show has had to issue a statement regarding the hate its cast was getting. Before The Summer I Turned Pretty season three was released, the show issued a PSA on X, requesting viewers not to bully or target the cast, crew, or any members of the community.
But the hate still came, and now another statement had to be issued. Vernon Sanders, Amazon TV Chief, spoke with Variety about the issue, saying,
"We’ve had similar situations in the past with adaptations, where there is a fanbase out there that I think can get rowdy, and it sometimes can blur the line between characters and actors or overstep,”
He continued,
“And so we really appreciate them and appreciate their passion, but we’re trying to be more proactive about setting expectations of what we want to encourage and maybe what we find not appropriate. And I think our creators and our cast really appreciate us taking the proactive stance there.”
The eighth episode of The Summer I Turned Pretty season three was released on 27th August 2025, which featured Jeremiah ending his engagement with Belly and leaving. Belly decided to fly to Paris to pursue her dreams, and thus, the wedding is off.
There are still three episodes left in the season; thus, we are yet to find out if Belly will end up with Conrad or decide to leave the Fisher brothers behind and focus on herself.
The Summer I Turned Pretty is streaming on Prime Video.
