A bold new chapter of the sci-fi franchise Stargate has been greenlit by Prime Video. This franchise has spanned multiple films and series since the release of the first film in 1994, starring James Spader and Kurt Russell. Now, we're stepping into a brand-new era with the franchise in TV series form.

The iconic franchise is officially moving into a new phase, and this project will be headed by showrunner Martin Gero, who has been a part of the franchise for a very long time.

Here's everything we know about the upcoming project.

Brand-new Stargate series green-lit by Amazon under Martin Gero

Amazon MGM Studios has officially green-lit a brand-new Stargate series, and this series is set to take the franchise into its bold new phase. The new series is neither a reboot nor a direct continuation of any existing project of the franchise. It is an entirely visionary new chapter for the franchise. The project is set to be led by showrunner Martin Gero.

Martin Gero is not a stranger to the franchise, as his very first real job in the industry was as a story editor for the franchise with Stargate: Atlantis. Now, Gero is returning to his roots with the new project, and he promises an extraordinary experience with the new series.

Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a story editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series. Stargate taught me everything about making television—it’s written into my DNA. I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase.

In the announcement trailer for the project, Gero dedicates the new series to the fans who've stayed loyal to the franchise over the years. He also goes on to promise an extraordinary experience for those who will be joining the franchise's fanbase with this project:

"For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith—this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world—I promise you’re in for something extraordinary."

Martin Gero will be joined by Executive Producers Tory Tunnell and Joby Harold for Safehouse Pictures, Ronal Emmerich and Dean Devlin, also Stargate veterans. They will also be joined by Joe Mallozzi and Brad Wright as consulting producers who've been a part of the franchise for a long time.

Nick Pepper, an executive at Amazon MGM Studios, commented on the upcoming new addition to the franchise:

"Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos. In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin, Tory, and Joby, we’re honored to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience, one that honors the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future."

There are no plot or casting details available for the upcoming project as of now, but stay tuned for all the updates on the Prime Video show.
