Amazon Prime recently announced that a brand-new Stargate series was officially in production. More than 30 years after the franchise's creation, this reboot, considered a brand-new phase for the franchise, has officially been greenlit.
While the news regarding the reboot in itself is fascinating for fans of the franchise, there are a few details about this announcement that make this especially special for fans.
Keep reading to find out more about how Amazon Prime's take on the franchise is already doing one thing right, which puts it over any other franchise reboot series.
Amazon Prime's Stargate has all the right ingredients for a reboot
Since Stargate: Universe (2011) and Origins, this Amazon Prime show is the most recent return of the franchise, and this has fans overjoyed. The fact that this series is aiming to draw old fans with the franchise but also new fans by making it a completely unique project, unconnected in any way, adds an extra layer of excitement.
The biggest reason why this announcement has overjoyed fans is that Prime Video has brought creatives who are veterans in this franchise and have a lot of knowledge and expertise about Stargate. The veterans understand the need to create a new chapter, an extraordinary journey within the existing lore and mythology.
Prime Video announced that Martin Gero would be taking over as showrunner, who is a veteran through and through. Gero's first real job in the industry was as a story editor for the franchise. Talking about his roots, Gero explained:
"I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA."
Joining him as executive producers are Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, both veterans of the franchise. Additionally, Brad Wright and Joe Mallozi, also veterans, are joining as consulting producers, underscoring that the new show has no intention of deviating from the franchise's roots.
During the announcement video for the new series, Gero explained the show's concept:
"It is not a reboot. It's its own unique chapter in the Stargate universe. So, of course, we're making the show for the fans, of course, but we're also making it for the people that have never watched Stargate...for us it's really important that a brand new audience can come in and then if they love it, they can go back and watch everything else."
The concept of featuring a new story in the same mythology but with all the means available today gives these creators the benefit of attracting older viewers while finding new ones who are just looking for that sci-fi adventure to hook them in. The creatives behind the show completely understand the need of the hour and are well-equipped to deliver on it.
Staying true to the roots while delivering a fresh take is exactly what this franchise needed, and thankfully, it's exactly what Gero has in mind for the new Prime Video show.
