The disaster of Costa Concordia in Survival Mode Episode 9
Episode 9 of Survival Mode will recount the incident of January 13, 2012. Per BBC, on that day Costa Concordia left Civitavecchia with 3,206 passengers and 1,023 crew. Although its course was set, the ship took a detour to give a maritime “salute” to the island of Giglio, off Tuscany coast. This is the place where the disaster happened.
The area is known for uneven rock formations. These rock formations can often cause immense destruction to the ships. This is what eventually happened to Costa Concordia. While the ship was travelling at a speed of 16 knots, it hit rocks, which damaged its left side. The engine rooms were affected, leading to power loss. This created chaos amongst the passengers.
In the beginning, the passengers were not given the right information. They were only told about a blackout. However, soon the ship began to tilt, which created panic amongst the passengers. When the ship tilted to more than 30 degrees, the captain finally gave the green light to abandon the ship.
However, before the ship was fully evacuated, Captain Schettino of Costa Concordia abandoned the bridge and, despite orders of the coastguard, he did not return to his post. Although a rescue mission was carried out, many were left on the ship. In the end, 32 people died.
The incident left a grim impact all over the world. It cannot be denied that the negligence of the crew impacted the safety of the passengers. The captain of the ship was sentenced to 16 years in prison. The tragedy of Costa Concordia will be shown in the ninth episode of Survival Mode.
