The fight between the rebellion and the Empire seems to be escalating in Andor Season 2 Episode 7 after the third batch of episodes has been released. Episodes 7-9 are building up the Ghorman revolution to the tipping point for featuring the Ghorman massacre, a part of the Star Wars canonical history. These episodes are the formative moments for the Rebel Alliance.
One thing that stood out in this batch of episodes was a ballad that played at the end of Andor Season 2 Episode 7, something that is rarely seen in the Star Wars franchise. However, this creative decision to include a ballad in the credits had a deeper meaning than apparent at first glance.
Here's what the lyrics of the ballad at the end of Andor Season 2 Episode 7 mean in regards to the events of the show.
Meaning behind the ballad at the end of Andor Season 2 Episode 7
Music has been a secret weapon for shows to drive their points into the audiences, to say more than words can, be it The Last of Us playing Through the Valley at the end of Season 2, Episode 2, and Ellie singing Take On Me in Episode 3, or Andor with the I Knew at multiple points. The ballad (in the Ghorman language) that plays in the background as the credits roll for Andor Season 2 Episode 7 is titled I Knew. This Ghorman-language aria has lyrics written by Tony Gilroy, and the music is composed by Brandon Roberts. Tony Gilroy wrote the lyrics for the piece, and then it was translated into the Ghorman language by the person who made the language.
To properly deliver the terror of the Ghorman massacre, the show needs its audience emotionally invested in their rebellion, and they're using music to do so. Andor Season 2 Episode 7 features this heartfelt aria in many places. It plays on the radio when Cassian enters the Ghorman hotel, and from Dedra's radio while she's looking over Coruscant from the apartment. Then, the aria is completely heard while the credits roll on Andor Season 2 Episode 7.
I Knew is full of foreshadowing for the impending doom in the form of the Ghorman massacre in Andor Season 2 Episode 7 when it sings:
"One more daybreak – one more sunset – one more… / How do I live?"
"Our time has wandered / No light left on that pathway / Oh, Farewell... oh…"
The lyrics of this aria can also be attributed to a more personal storyline, Bix and Cassian's relationship's future. By the end of this batch of episodes, it appears that Bix and Cassian's relationship is over, as Bix decides to leave him. The lyrics bidding farewell, dipped in anxiety about the dark roads ahead, are ripe with Bix's emotional turbulence as she makes the heartbreaking choice to step away.
Additionally, Episode 8 features the Ghorman people singing a traditional Ghorman aria as they protest the Empire. The emotional and artistic connection being established by Andor in this new batch of episodes is an attempt to establish the Ghorman culture before they unleash the horror of the impending massacre, so that it hurts even more.
The creators of Andor are leaving behind no artistic tool as they bring together the complex Star Wars history, while detaching from it has allowed them to actually bring emotional depth into the losses of places like Ghorman.
