The Last of Us video game has made fans love the song "Future Days" by Pearl Jam, and it was a special touch when Ellie sang it in Episode 5, "Feel Her Love" in HBO's series adaptation. However, the sing alongs seem to becoming a bit too repetitive.

In one of the show's breathtaking scenes that takes place in Season 2 Episode 4, Day One, Ellie sang "Take On Me" by A-ha. However, it was a tad bit monotonous when she sang another song in the next episode, and I feel that the guitar songs are taking away from The Last of Us' story.

Guitar songs might not be working out too well for The Last of Us

If you have played the game, you are aware of the importance that "Future Days" hold in the game; however, using songs like this in every episode might not be the best way to go forward.

Season 2 of The Last of Us takes us on a much darker path than the debut season. Joel dies, Ellie goes out to hunt Abby, and eventually turns into someone we do not recognise. While the songs add emotional depth to the story, I think it is more important to just focus on carrying the story forward. A lot needs to be covered this season, and I feel the songs do not necessarily need to be featured in every episode.

The second season will end after two more episodes, set to release on 18th and 25th May 2025, respectively. One of those episodes will tell us the story of Eugene, Gail's husband, who is dead in the current timeline. The episode is set to show Eugene's backstory, how he knew Joel, and what led to his death.

This season of The Last of Us also needs to address the character of Dina in more detail. Dina has more to offer, and is not just Ellie's best friend/partner. While it is sweet to see their relationship prosper, I am hoping to see her play a much bigger role in the show.

Thus, it would be better if we got to see more character-centric episodes, or even the ones that stick to the game religiously. While the show is doing a great job, I don't think it's the best idea to use music in almost every episode to invoke sympathy for Ellie. Joel teaching Ellie how to play the guitar was a beautiful detail, indeed. However, it's better if it stays like that, a happy memory, and not something that is reused to distract us from the current storyline.

As we head towards the end of The Last of Us season two, fans (whether they have played the game or not) are eagerly waiting to see how the season builds Ellie's character before she goes all out in season three. The Last of Us has been renewed for a third season, which will likely take us to Ellie finally avenging Joel's death and taking revenge.

As reported by Forbes, Isabela Merced, who plays Dina in The Last of Us Season 2, said that filming for the third season will not begin before 2026. This suggests that these last few episodes are the only show content we will get until 2026/2027. That being said, it would be a much more meaningful season if the last few episodes focus more on the story story than songs.

All released episodes of The Last of Us are available to stream on Max. New episodes of The Last of Us Season 2 come out on Sundays on HBO at 9 pm ET.
