As Guy Ritchie’s MobLand keeps churning out one twist after the other, one thing that has been established by now is that Harry is one of the most important characters in the show. He is, in fact, given more importance than Conrad and Meave’s eldest son, Brendan, and Seraphine, born to Conrad out of an affair, as Harry is invited to the family meetings that they are not.
In MobLand Episode 5, while talking about Richie’s plan behind inviting the Harrigans to Tommy’s funeral, Harry mentions that if Richie had indeed wanted a war, he could have killed Harry way back because that would have been a valid and equal way of avenging Tommy’s death.
To this, Eddie Harrigan, Kevin’s son and Conrad’s grandson, who is also behind the whole fiasco, comments that since Harry is not a Harrigan, killing him would have meant an eye for a toe, not an eye for an eye. However, both Conrad and Kevin promptly shut him up, establishing Harry’s value to this family again.
Now, besides the Harrigans, Harry has a family of his own, which is supposed to be his real family, consisting of his wife Jan and daughter Gina. However, Harry is so entangled with the Harrigans, whom Jan refers to as his other family, that he often neglects his duties as a husband and a father.
While Jan keeps getting disappointed with Harry’s actions and constant failure to keep his promises, the couple is not shown to be engaged in fighting like a normal couple in this situation would. Since nothing is really normal about Harry’s job or his way of life, the composure that Jan shows also seems unnatural, hinting at the fact that she might be losing feelings for Harry.
Jan getting involved with the Harrigans’ drama might kill her marriage to Harry in MobLand
Jan is shown to be an extremely sensitive person in MobLand. She goes to therapy, she takes care of their daughter, Gina, and she really tries to take care of and make her marriage with Harry work. However, not the same can be said about Harry; not because he is not inherently a good person or does not care about his family, but because his job demands a lot from him and he does not have much left to offer to his wife and daughter.
In a marriage like this, the entire weight of carrying it forward and maintaining its sanity generally descends on one person and in MobLand, that person is Jan. Given the kind of a person Jan is, all of it is proving to be too much for her, resulting in an emotional distance from Harry, which essentially hints at the crumbling of their marriage.
Talking to Alice, the random woman Jan had befriended at one of her group therapists, and who is actually with the cops, she had said that she needs an emotional connection to get physically intimate with someone. This again showed how important emotional intimacy is to her, which is massively missing from her and Harry’s marriage.
While she does not shout at Harry or loses her composure even when he keeps missing their therapy appointments and asks them to go and live on a boat, her lack of interest in the details of what he is doing hints at the fact that her calmness might be coming from the coldness of their relationship and she is gradually emotionally distancing herself from him.
However, given how Conrad visited Jan and threatened her to make sure that she keeps things fine with Harry and does not talk to anyone about what he does or how their relationship is, it seems unlikely that Jan will be able to leave Harry, regardless of what she feels.
It now remains to be seen how long Jan can manage to make her marriage work because it is very evident that she is not happy and feels suffocated. No matter how much she cares for Harry or vice versa, with things reaching a boiling point between the Harrigans and the Stevensons with Vron’s car being blown up in the latest episode, Harry and Jan’s marriage will essentially suffer even more and Jan might have to bear some active consequence given how important a piece Harry is in this whole fiasco.
MobLand can be streamed on Paramount+ with new episodes dropping weekly on every Sunday.
