No one saw this one coming, especially not The Masked Singer judge Rita Ora. On the April 30 episode of the show, the crowd and judges alike were floored when Oscar-winning director Taika Waititi pulled off the Lucky Duck mask, revealing he had been the mystery performer all along. But the most priceless reaction was easily Rita’s.

Completely stunned to discover her own husband had been secretly competing on the show, Rita stared in disbelief before blurting out,

“Are you kidding me?”

As confetti rained down, she laughed through the shock and shouted, clearly more amused than anything:

“I hate you!”

The stunning revelation came during the semi-finals of The Masked Singer's thirteenth season, where celebrities perform musical numbers while disguised in elaborate costumes. Throughout the season, judges and viewers work to identify the mysterious performers based on vocal quality and carefully placed clues.

The Masked Singer has built its reputation on surprising twists, but few have been as personal as this connection between judge and contestant. The show typically features celebrities competing while their identities remain concealed until elimination, but Lucky Duck's role broke the traditional format by appearing periodically throughout the season to offer "cheeky and luck-related clues."

Lucky Duck is unmasked on The Masked Singer

The semi-final episode of The Masked Singer delivered one of its most unexpected twists yet when Lucky Duck dramatically interrupted the elimination between Coral and Boogie Woogie, only to announce that both would be moving on to the finale.

The judges were visibly stunned, with Jenny McCarthy cheering in excitement and Robin Thicke noting it was a first for the show.

But the surprises didn’t stop there. Just as the tension began to settle, Lucky Duck teased that an even bigger reveal was coming:

"And I'm not done. The biggest surprise of all isn't that they are unmasking, it's that I am."

Before removing the mask, he took center stage for a high-energy, choreographed performance to Queen’s “I Want to Break Free,” complete with backup dancers and moves no one saw coming. The moment blended drama, humor, and flair: classic The Masked Singer, with a twist.

The character dropped hints about working on "massive movie sets" and knowing Oscars, but nothing prepared Rita for the moment her husband removed the elaborate duck mask.

"I thought you were the most annoying thing on this whole show," Rita admitted as she approached Waititi, who scooped her up for a kiss.

Earnestly declaring:

"I love you so much."

How did Taika Waititi manage to keep this secret?

When host Nick Cannon asked how Taika Waititi managed to keep his identity hidden from his wife, the Oscar-winning director kept it simple: he did it just to see her. Joking that she’s always on set and working nonstop, Waititi said:

"How I kept it a secret, she's always here, so it was easy."

Rita Ora shared that there was another reason behind his surprise appearance: their kids are huge fans of The Masked Singer, making the whole experience even more meaningful.

Waititi, known for his work on Jojo Rabbit, also leaned into the fun of performing. Ora reminded him of his long-standing dream to be a pop star, to which he laughed and admitted that this was probably the closest he'd ever get.

"This is it. This is as close as I'm getting," he said, with characteristic humor.

The unexpected family twist added a sweet and hilarious layer to the semi-final episode, proving that even a judge can be completely blindsided in a show that thrives on big reveals.

The Masked Singer airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FOX and streams the next day on Hulu.
